When one considers tbe immense
amount of property which is annu-
ally consumed by fire in this coun-
try ft is almost strange that an an-
nual "Fire Prevention Day” such
as is to be held in Illinois was not
established a good many years ago
Properly celebrated by fire brigade
drills school drills thorough inves
ligation of pub ic and other premi-
ses and instruction as to tbe pre-
vention and fighting of fire nothing
but good would result It is well
known that milliona of dollars worth
t
of property are destroyed each year
by fires carelessly started and be-
cause of defective methods of deal-
ing with fires
Tbe formation of farmers’ clubs
is a good thing and the country
school house may well be utilized
for tbe holding of meetings One
fault hitherto found with rural life
is its lack of sociability That
shortcoming is not so pronounced
as many think still it exists and
anything that can change it is to be
welcomed The holding of meetings
for sociability aod the discussing of
of questions of moment would to a
very large extent gain the desind
end
Homes are made happy and joy
us not by wealth social position
or fine clothes but by tone and
temper A mansion filled with
choicest furniture and works of art
may also be filled with domestic dis-
cord And a bumble cottage with
its sparse furniture and worldly be-
longings may be Indian t with peace
and happiness Love can transform
a' peasant’s hut into a palace of de-Mght
He wbotakes the world as he
finds it and helps to lift It Into a
higher state and carries heavy
loads with a light heart is a bene-
factor to his fellows
When a man begins to speak and
to think in dollars only it shows
that he is the blare and not the mas
ter of bustnesss and it is time for
him to call a halt
The man filled with a sense of his
own importance is seldom marked
by much learning His vanity
stands in tbe way of bis acquiring
knowledge
Many people who boast of their
principles are quite willing to get
rid of them wbeoever it suits their
convenience

If some people would be as care
ful of the compaoiousbips their
children form aud of the books they
read as they are of the food they eat
and tbe clothes they - wear there
would be fewer heart aches and
heart breaks over sons and daught
ers gone to the bad
The persuit of the ideal if faithful-
ly followed is never fruitless To be
sure the ideal may not be reached
but if it be of a lofty character hb
who tries to reach it cannot fail to
be a better man by reason of hat
ideal and of lbs honest - attempt to
gain it
Perhaps it is not possible to make
a man good by acts of the legisla-
ture but such acts can make it de-
oidedly unpleasant to want to do
wrsag and that is so small gaia

IT COSTS MONEY NOT
TO BE WELL DRESSED
Careless dress has cost many s man more than neat' clothes
would have cost him The cost has keen in lost opportunity
No one expects nun to ''spruce up to go fishing — Lut
on the same principle no one has much respect for the man who
always looks as tho he was "going fishing ' ' i
To appear well dressed is more a matter of personal
pride than pocketbook pride
