The long-looked-for grand jury
(or which petition! were circulated
aeveral montha ago convened Monday:-
The inquisition is in' charge
ol Judge Guy Nelson of Muskogee
to whom the petitions were address-
ed‘Acting otf the resolutions adopted
by the local tax-payer’s league meet-
ing held on Saturday July asking
the governor to send a representa-
tive from the attorney general’s of-
fice Hon Edwin Dabney of Altus
commissioned to cotnt to Wtf-
oner and assist county attorney
John B Moss''
Dick Louthan assistant attorney
general who Was also assigned here
to assist Pabney foiled to show up
Monday and it is not known whethet
he will come at all
After the grand jurors were drawn
Monday from the Panel of 24 it was
discovered by a challenge of Attor-
ney General Dabney that one of the
its members had served a term in a
penal institution in Kansas which
disqualified him and he was excused
The remainder of the panel had been
excused and left the courthouse Ac-
cordingly four more names were
drawn and from the four a new juror
waa added The jury as finally se-
lected is aa follows:
S F Workman was chosen as fore-
man J A Ensminger of Wagoner
chosen aa clerk
B A Sorensen A E Gaulding H
L Denton G W Peavy of Coweta
W H Butler J A Rogers A A
Points and S G Nave ot Porter G
S Muchmore Wagoner and J Reed
of Adams Crek
The following is the charge given
tc the jury by Judge Nelson:
“The power of a granJ jury may
be greatly abused If it mumnors
or eny of them have a dispn:tion to
inquire into delicate private or per-
sonal mtutirs as a result of pleen
vindictiveness or even curiosity
You will remember gentlemen you
are here to serve your state and
county and not to satisfy the iU
will of any man or group of men
and you will not permit yourself to
be imposed upon by any such
As the intent of a grand jury is to
be a eecret matter there is no means
of giving to the public the proceed-
ings either while the Jury “ -aion
or afterwards except that in
cases where indictments are returned
and then only after an arrest has
been made no further report of its
findings can be expected until after
its adjournment -
The grand Jury is the outgrowth
of agitation upon the part of the
tax-payers league which started last
year and has been kept up until the
present time The league through
a committee investigated the various
county offices last year prior to the
campaign and gave them a clean bill
of health Following this the major-
ity of its leaders were candidates for
office in -the last year’s campaign
A L Hausam present county com-
missioner being the only one that
pulled through
Last week representatives of part
of- the owners of the land in the
Verdigris drainage district were be-
fore the county commissioners ask-
ing for an investigation but owing
to a lack of funds in this district
is was refused by the majority of the
commissioners It is surmised that
the grand jury wili be asked to look
into this matter -
It is also rumored that former
county officials as well as some of
the present officers will be investi-
gated that guardianship matters will
be investigated especially that of the
Dan Tucker estate: that the failure
of the First State Bank last Decem-
ber will also be looked into but just
what way is not known However
these are rumors — the future alone
can show just what they will do
Wagoner is one of the cleanest
and most moral towns of its sire in
the state It has been many years
since a murder was committed in
the city only one that of Jack Bur-
ris having taken place north of
town about 8 years ago by out of
town hi-jacked Several murders
mostly negroes have taken place in
the county
In Wagoner the general feeling is
that if wrong doing exists that it
should be properly punished but lit-
tle ground for an Investigation ex-
ists merely rumor and malice aided
by politics That indictments in
various matters will be made is be-
lieved that convictions will ensue
is doubted by the general public
The first case that was submitted
to the consideration in compliance
with the state law that all cases
pending that had been filed within
I period of three days of the con-
vening of a grand jury shall be sub-
The murder of the infant' near
Neodesha for which Charles Tracey
and Mrs Whitekiller are now in Jail
on the alleged charge will be taken
up and probably the negro shooting
near Coweta on Sunday
On Wednesday the grand Jury re-
turned in -indictment Mintt M C
Tipton and Jim White charging them
with the larceny of an automobile
The running gear of the cor waa
found at the place of Willis Parker
" Jn this county near the 8paulding
bridge The car was the property
of A B' Tlsslnrton of Muekogee
which had bee n’oanedto Rev A®
Moody and taken from the church
during a aervtce The ear waa ta-
tken to Tulsa where the body waa re-
moved and while the running gear
was being taken to Muskogee high
water was encountered and it was
left at the Paarker place
The Jury also returned an indict-
ment against Charley Tracy charg-
ing him with murder in the first de-
gree ' Tracy ia the man Implicated in
the death of the young baby of Mrs
Whitekiller
It was rumored this morning that
Charlie’ Hopkins of the Muskogee
Times-Democrat who has been cov-
ering that body for- his paper was
to be called before the Jury today
and cited for contempt This is sup-
posed to be in punishment for a fea-
ture story that appeared in his pa-
per on Tuesday evening dealing with
the jury and local politics -

Mr A F Houston of the A it
M Collegt was a guest and in re-
sponse to an invitation spoke on the
county agent situation He stated
that wide dissatisfaction existed
among the farmers of not only Wag-
oner county but among the farmers
of the state and the United States
He told of the fact that the farm-
ers of th state were now beginning
to experience competition that the
virgin soil had' been exhausted and
there waa no west left He verified
the figure aa given in last week’s is-
sue of this paper as to the cost of
the county agent and the home de-
monstration agent He told how the
county agents worked under the di-
rection of the college and the U S
department of agriculture dissemi-
nating all the knowledge of expert-
mentsSif all kinda carried on at the
college He sate that if the county
agents were abolished that the
money the department has been al-
lowing this eounty will be used
elsewhere ' He stated that if the
agents in this county wera not satis-
factory that they would be moved
elsewhere and new agents sent here
in their place -- Ha urged that this
be done ft it would permit 1 the of-
fices being continued as part of
the county’s work

that the kids had received over 2000
baths there the past month
