WHALES DEFEND THEIR Y0UNQ.
Strong Affection Exists Among Levia-
thana of the Sea.
Whales—like so many other anl
mals—are brave In defense of their
little ones. A young whale was
once harpooned; Its mother, in great
distress, came, and seizing hold of It,
•lived with It to a considerable depth;
then she rope to the surface and dart-
ed this way and t.iat. as If vainly seek-
ing for some other means of escape.
Though closely followed by the boats
she made no effort to get away her-
^self; her sole thought was for her
child. At last she was harpooned, but
even then 8be clung to her little one
until, in the course of an hour, both
were dead. Two whales were once
swimming together, and one of them
was harpooned. The wounded ani-
mal. assisted by her friend, made a
terrible resistance, and sent a boat
with five men in it to the bottom. At
length the injured one died of her
wounds, when her companion, rather
than survive her. stretched his head
over her dead body and allowed him
self to be killed.—'' Little Folks.''
No Water, Motorist Uses Milk.
A motorist was stranded, his water
having given out, some miles from a
habitation or pump. A milk cart came
along. The Inventive motorist bought
a supply at famine prices, filled up
his water tank, drove merrily home,
and has a good story to tell in the bar-
gain.
FEED YOU MONEY.

You Money and Fame.
"Ever since boyhood I have -been
especially fond of meats, and I am
convinced I ate too rapidly, and failed
to masticate my food properly.
"The result was that 1 found my-
self. a few years ago. afflicted with
ailments of the stomach and kldneya,
which interfered seriously with my
business.
"At last I took the advice of friends
and began to eat Grape-Nuts ins(ead
of the heavy meats, etc., that had con-
stituted my former dieL
"I found that 1 was at once benefited
by the change, that I was soon reliev-
ed from the heart-burn and the Indi-
gestion that used to follow my meals,
that the pains In my back from my
kidney affection had ceased, Bhowlng
that those organs had been healed, and
that my nerves, which used to be un-
steady, and my brain, which was slow
and lethargic from a heavy diet of
meats and greasy foods, had, not in a
moment, but gradually, and none the
less surely, been restored to normal
efficiency. Now every nerve is steady
and my brain and thinking faculties
are quicker and more acute than for
years past.
"After my old style breakfaats I
used to suffer during the forenoon
from a feeling of weakness which hin-
dered me seriously In my work, but
since I have begun to use Grape-Nuts
food I can work till dinner time with
all ease and comfort." Name given by

This distlnctili between Just and

The present proposal is, as Mr.
Walker D. Hines of houisville showed
In his remarkable testimony the other
day before the Senate Committee at
Washington, to crystallize flexible and
Justly discriminatory rates into fixed
government rates which cannot be
changed except by the intervention ol
some government tribunal, and by this
very process to increase "the temple
tion to depart from the published rate
and the lawful rate In order to meel
some overpowering and urgent com-
mercial condition. "—New York Sun.

New South Wales Opals.

is obtained at White Cliffs, near Wll-

much as $350 an ounce. Up to the
end of 1904 $4,000,000 worth of opals

Normal Death Without Pain.
Normal death, if tbe phrase be per
mitted. is a painless occurrence, us-
ually preceded by gradual loss of con-
sciousness entailing no more suffer-
ing than going to sleep. It is not
merely that the pain of death Is
trifling as compared with the physical
pain of a scald; it is nqn-existent.—

Irish Alphabet.
The Irish language has only
eighteen letters. Some times each
letter is written separately and not
Joined together. The chief difficulty
in learning Irish is that there are in-
numerable abbreviations for words
and phrases. The Irish language Is
non-phonetic, the words rarely be-
ing a key to the correct pronuncia-
tion.

My father was a member for sever-

At one time he was called to attend
the funeral of a man who had been
well known and highly respected by
his townspeople. 'Twas a delightful
summer day, and the attendance of
friends was large and crowded the
small farmhouse so it was decided to
place the casket In the front yard.
The undertaker was a man of good
intentions, but not gifted In speech,
and when the time came for the
friends to view the remains he elect-
rified the officiating clergyman and
some others by extending the Invita-
tion in this manner:
"The house being small, our dead
friend will be exhibited outdoora."
