A SHORT CHAPTER.
The Town of Chelsea, Indian
Territory, is Wed on the Frisco
System of railways, at the crossing
of the Oklahoma & Cherokee
Central Railway and is 379 miles
southwest of St. Louis, and 166
miles east of Oklahoma City, and
ia one of the best towns on the
Frisco System between the points
named. It ia forty/niles south of
the Kansas and Indian Territory
boundary line, and sixty odd miles
west of the Missouri and Indian
Territory boundary line.in
center of the famous agricultural
portion of the Cherokee Nation.
The town ia ideally situated on a
broad prairie, in the valley of
Pryor Creek, has good drainage;
is healthy and thoroughly alive.
Churches and Schools.
In point of culture it is abreast
of the towns of the states, and has
an academy that prepares students
for admission into any of the
colleges of the country. This
sohool is under management of
Professor G. A. Bearden and has a
full corps of teachers to complete
its various departments. It has
four active churches and Sunday
schools, which is evidence of the
moral tone of the place.
Population and Buaineaa.
At present the population is
1500 souls, and increasing all the
time, and in course of a few years
there will be a little city where
now a modest town rears its head.
It was incorporated in 1882, and
has never had a boom, but on the
contrary, has steadilly grown till
today it bids fair to be a city. It
has 35 mercantile establishments
that are on a prosperous plane, to
say nothing of the various "small
fry" that is to be fonnd in all
towns, three livery stables, two
good hotels, besides several
boarding houses; two large lumber
yards; two mills and elevators; one
newspaper; several attorneys;
several doctors: three good res-
taurants and three banks that are
doing an immense business.
Area of Trade Territory.
The town is the trading point
for an area of not less than nine
hundred square miles, covering
all of that farming country between
the M. K. & T. railroad and the
Verdigris river, which is the moat
fertile in the entire Cherokee
Nation.
It shipa annually 20,000 tons of
hay ; 60,000 bushels of wheat;
800,000 bushels of corn; and of
miscellaneoua products not less
than 400 car loads. A better idea
of the volume of freight business
can be obtained from this single
statement than all the language
that the writer is capable of, when
the freight receipts of the Frisco
railway is given, which is over
$1000 per day since January 1st
1906.
Productiveness of the Soil.
The recent act of Congress
that enablea the Indian to have the
reetrictions upon the sale of his
lands removed, which a large per-
cent of them are doing, is throw-
ing thousands of acres of land on
the market, and if you want a
farm, now ia your chance to get
the beat land, that will produce
from fifty to seventy-five bushels
of corn to the acre, and from fifteen
to thirty-five bushels of wheat,
and from forty to seventy-five
bushels of oat*. Such crops ns
potatoes and truck, in the strict
sense, has not hail much attention
but there is plenty of land that
will produce 250 to 300 bushels of
potatoes to the acre. Farmers are
ooming here every day to boy
these lsnds and soon this country
will be filled with oultured and
scientific farmers from the states.
These lands are now oheaper
they will ever be again, and now
is the time to buy before the
values are out of reach of the man
with small capital.
Oil and Gaa Production.
The country is underlaid with
oil and gaa. At present, the Cher-
okee Oil & Gas Co. are pumping
114 wells all told, with a capacity
of over 1500 barrels per day.
The Standard Oil Co. has a
pipe line from Neodesha, Kansas
to a station on the above named
lease on Spencer creek, thence
north ten miles through the field,
whioh extends up the valley of
the Verdigris river and Panther
creek. The production of these
wells is pumped direct to the re-
finery at Neodesha. All told there
are about 250 producing wells in
the Chelsea field.
The depth of sand varies from
12 to 75 feet, and is found at an
average depth of 450 feet.
The Cherokee Oil & Gas Co,
and the Superior Oil & Gas Co.
are firing their boilers at their
power plants with natural gas.
At present gas is not utilized for
any other purpose.

Indian Inspector Wright, at
Muskogee, has been notified by
Secretary Hichcock of another oil
regulation. It requires that les-
see of oil lands in the Cherokee
and Creek nations will be required
to drill at least one well upon each
lease within twelve months after
the approval of the bond. Also
that the Indian agent will be auth-
orised to make arrangements with
purchasers of the oil and pipe-line
companies for the payment of the
royalty direct to him. This will
faciliate matters, as the pipe-line
comiMuiies deduct the royalties in
settling with the oil companies in
each rase which has heretofore
complicated matters somewhat in
settlement of royalty due at the
end of carh month. The require-
ports thnt have been received thai [yet carried on. Hereafter the|sinking wells.
