with fur robes: then oue of the men
took the chauffeur's seat, and they
whirled away.
They were a party of artists, irtu

tending the Mali!lie Garden and. as tlie

to continue their revelry in an automo

lalx. Antoine de Vare and Victor Ger
malne; the women, or. rather, the girls.
Julie Ernst. Madeline le Croix ami
Marie de Tonr. Cliabuialx was actiug
as chauffeur, with Julie Ernst benide
him; then came De Vare and Made-
line le Croix, while the hindmost
seat was occupied liy Victor Germaine
and Marie de Tonr. leaving the g;ir
den, they crossed the Seine and. enter
Ing the Place de la Concorde, went tip
the broad avenue of the Champ*
Elysees. After passing tbe Arc de
Trloinphe they turned into the Bols de
Boulogne. It wan 3 o'clock In the morn
Ing and still some hours before day-
light. Tbe weather was cold, ami they
made fre<jnent stops to refresh tlieni
selves.
One of the party was out of her ele-
ment. This was Marie de Tour, a
young girl from the provinces. Her
family hsd sunk from comparative af
fluence to poverty, and «dje bad recent-
ly come to Paris to study art. 8be bad
no knowledge of I'arls or I*aria ens
tom* and bad taken up with these com-
panions siroply because she chanced to
be thrown with tbem. She did not real-
ise that they were not safe associates
for a pure young girl. The ball she bad
attended was something very strange
to her. and tbe mad pace they were go-
ing in the automobile and their shouts
and sougs were discordant to her. She
did not drink wine or Join in tbe shont
Ing and singing. Gradually she liegao
to feel an inexpressible dread.
"Ask him not to go so fast," she said
to her companion.
"Mile, de Tour wishes you to go fast
erf' shouted Germalne, with a laugb.
"Ah, well, she shall have her way."
And the speed was increased.
Marie clung to tbe back of tbe seat
before liet. iu terror. She had never
ridden so fast Iu her life, not even in a
railway train, for she had but seldom
been on the rails and then only In the
Blow country way trains.
Then her companion noticed that sbe
was casting frightened glams-s to the
reur.
"Do you fear that another automobile
coming more rapidly than ours wlil run
Into us?" Then he shouted trt the chauf-
feur that Mile, de Tour feared a colli-
sion from the renr and could only lie re-
assured by g <ing faster.
These sallies <>( her chevalier were
much enjoyed by the rest of the party,
who ah iiited ami laughed at them and
urged the chauffeur to drive the ma-
chine faster. Marie kept casting lier
frightened glances liehlml. ami every
time she did so a chill passed over her.
"What are you hsiklng at?" asked
(iermaliie.
"These lights of the city are ao
strange, so fantastic. Kvery time we
pass one of thein It seems to light up
something Itehiud us. Sometimes It
looks like a fluttering white sheet;.then
there Is a glittering as of polished
steel."
"Felix." called Germalne, "Mile,
de Tour is frightened at the street
lamps. Go where It Is dark."
There was more lsughb>r at this, and
presently ( liabulalx turned Into a dark
street. Still Marie kept looking back.
"Do you see your white sheet now?"
asked Germalne.
Marie gave another look to the rear
liefore answering and when she turn-
ed again covered her face with her
bands, her Ixaly shaking convulsively.
Her companion looked buck and, see-
ing nothing unusual, exclaimed:
"You silly mouse! What are you
shivering ahontt First you tire afraid
of the lights, then of the dark. Nei-
ther seems lo please you."
"Now it Is black!" she gasped.
"What Is blackV
"Ami its eyes—oh, lis eyes! They are
caverns!'
"Tut, tut, little girl! You need a
brnc« r. I-'ellx," he shouted, "mademoi-
selle wishes you to stop at the next
cafe! She needs some absinth."
Felix did not hear. He had druuk n
great deal nutl was getting stupid. He
turned a bend iu the street. Intending
lo cross a viaduct a hundred yards
Sliced. He saw a red light ami turned
off the power, but liefore the sp«sd
could lie rcduced pens-ptllily he had
passed Ihe light, ami some timber that
had been placed across the way llew
up In the air. Then there was an un-
resisted whirring of wheels, a sinking
through space, a crash, and the party
of pleasure *mis in a twinkling turned
Into one of deulli.
