Chinese Civil War
Hits Gold Dollars
SIIANGHI Dee 9— (United Tress)
— American gobs newly arrived in
3hina have just had one of their
’ondest dfcartis go smash
Rumblings of civil warfare gave
he newcomers hopes that the Ameri-
can gold dollars in which they are
uaid might soon be worth consider-
ably more than their normal value
in Mexican silver dollars which are
the standard currency of China
But in China ns the newcomers
have discovered much to their sor-
row ordinary laws of exchange fail
to apply and the Mexican dollar in-
stead of being depreciated is far more
in demand in times of strife than
when everything is peaceful The
reason for this is that Chinese troops
ate paid in Mexican dollars When
wars occur silver dollars are needed
to pay tho troops and the extraordi-
nary demand firings the rate of ex-
change down The value of the gold
hjllar therefore is steadily grow-
ing less
