Tbe Elk City, Kansas, Sun of July
27 has the following account of tbe
loss by fire of a barn belonging to
Miss L'zzie Bryant, formerly of this
county: Miss L'zzie Bryant, who liyes
about 4 miles northwest of town bad
the misfortune last Friday night to
lose her barn b> fire. She was awak-
ened by the light and crackling of tbe
flames. When discovered tbe fire
had gained considerable headway
and Miss Bryant and her hired bands
turned their attention to saving the
stock. There were several horses in
ihe barn wben ii caught fire and nil
/ere saved. A set ot harnt ss was al-
so sa-ed All the hay and otber har-
ness and contents of tbe barn were
entirely consumed. All of tbe de-
troved property was uninsured and
all tbat was saved was insured. Ttiis
is a most unfortunate state of affairs
to be sure. It is not known how tbe
Ure originated, although the opinion
is tbat t was caused by lightning.
There was a terrific electric storm
tbat night. The fire wa« almost en-
tirely in the top of the barn when
discovered and this makes the light-
ning theory sound still more plausa-
ble. Miss Bryant values the barn
very highly aside from its Intrinsic
value. It was built by her father, D.
L. Bryant, a great many years ?go.
The total lost will amount to about
$800
