auto speeding through Wauke-
gan was balled by Constable
John Frazer
"I am William Jennings Bry-
an" the passenger told the offi-
cer “I am hurrying to Anti-
och 111 to keep a lecture en-
gagement” “Ah cut that stuff I never
heard ot anybody by tbe name
of William Jennings Bryan” the
constable declared “You can
tell it to the judge”
After some explanations Bry-
an finally succeeded in establish-
ing that there was such a mun
and that he really had bis lect-
ure engagement
Bryan was later stopped for
speeding at Zion City where the
constable knew him and ' gave
him a handshake Instead of fine

Fred A Browning Local Man-
ager for Several Years En-
ters Into Other Business
Announcement was finally made
Thursday by Fred A Browning local
manager of the Hood store to the
effect that he had sold his entire in-
terest to the A Hood & Sons who
has a chain of stores with headquar-
ters at Pittsburg Kan
The deal has been pending for
some time but was delayed for vari-
ous reasons -which could not be help-
ed Mr Browning owned a liulf in-
terest in the Miami store and hus
been a most progressive business
man well qualified for tbe position
It will be with regret that many peop-
ple learn pf his severance with the
business
Mr Browning will remain in Mi-
ami indefinitely and make this city
his home The change was made to
an extent because he has other ex-
tensive business interests 'outside of
the automobile business which 're-
quire his time und attention - - -

Fox who has been bookkeeper of

SWIMMING POOL EMPTIED
WILL BE CLEANED TODAY
The swimming pool at Riverview
Park was emptied today and thJ pool
will be cleaned and fresh water run
into it Since tbe repair work was
made necessary on tbe water and
light plant a week ago the manage-
ment ot the pool has been unable to
secure water
Indian guides and Alpine climbers
who were in the camp ot mountain
climbers of which Dr and Mrs Stone
were members started bringing the
body of Mr Stone back along the
perilous mountain trail today
The brief word reaching here from
the guides wus a message tolling of
heroism and tragedy
Mrs Stone lost her footing on the
steep slope ot Mount Aenon and fell
into the crevice Her husband at-
tempted -to pull her to the surfnee
with a rope He did not have strength
enough to curry out this purpose and
lowered himself to her sido
Lost His Footing
Gathering his wife in his arms Dr
Stone attempted to climb back He
lost his footing and fell back into an
even deeper crevice Death was be-
received lleved to have been Instantaneous so
great was the fall
Mrs Stone tumbled buck iulo the
shallower crevice where she was forc-
ed to lie until rescuing parties found
her Sunday
Dr and Mrs Stone left the cump
on July 17 on a practice climb of
three days iu ordqr to condition them-
selves for the big Alpine camp meet
at Lake Ohara this week

nouncement was made at the at-
torney general’s office today that
a special grand jury -w ill be sum-
moned to meet at Sapulpa August
8 to investigate the Judge Wright
bribery case
Judge S C Fullerton of Miuml
will have charge of the grand
Jury proceedings it was stated
Sapulpa July 28 — Mrs Virginia
Borman of Oklahoma ' City was
placed on the stand again today when
the preliminary hearing of Judge
Lucius Wright on a bribery charge
was resumed before Justice A E
Piltz here
Mrs Borman testified she received
a letter $rom the judge on May 10
of this year The letter partly torn
was Introduced ns evidence She
stated that her daughter May had
torn the letter and that the torn
portion was lost She testified that
on the torn portion tbe Judge had
written:
“By the middle of July everything
will have been settled and I will have
plenty of money I will go away for
a rest on June 1”
Mrs Boarman testified that the
judgo gave her 91500

had asked him as a friend to obtain
certain documents which Charles

torneys in the Atkin3 case inform
them that had made a mistake in
refusing a new trial and by so doing
"get himself out of serious trouble”
That Judge Wright “never grew
tired" of listening to “tedious oil
cases” and “was not on the bench
for nothing” were statements quoted
on the stand late yesterday by Mrs
T H Sturgeon as having been made
by the judge
She testified she had known Judge

ams edme in from Sioux City Iowa
on a vacation of two weeks most of
which will be spent here
Mr Adams has made splendid
progress since his - completion of
Work at the Missouri State Univer-
sity and has held the important po-
sition of industrial commissioner of
the Sioux City Chamber of Com-
merce for tho last year or two This
position he still holds and his rec-
ord has been an exceptionally good
one in that line of work It is report-
ed by many of his friends

of Commerce in Hotel Miami and

road on a direct line ’ north and
south and another running east and
west as a main artery for Ottawa

co-operation of the various towns of
the county would help greatly in
establishing permanent roads In this

The roads in and near Plcher Car-
din and Commerce were topics of
discussion during the luncheon
Commissioner Hocker stated that
heavy hauling in this section of the
county kept the roads in poor con-
dition Commissioner Hocker stated
that he had a plan to secure co-operation
from the towns In the north-
ern part of the county and hoped to
be able to improve the roads In this
section

Oklahoman Near Death
After Airplane Crash
Pawhuska July 28 — Henry Mays
aged 28 was seriously injured late
Wednesday when an airplane which
he was flying crashed to the ground
carrying with him Arthur Fortune
U passenger aged 17 Fortune es-
caped uninjured
The plane had just “taken off’’ the
ground and had reached a helghth of
approximately 260 feet when Mays
who is a local farmer and flier lost
control when the joist stick broke
from the universal socket
Mays sustained internal injuries
his chest being crushed and his head
badly cut He may lose his eyesight
The aviator was flying a machine
owned by his brother who taught
him to fly four months ago
Sheriff Refuses
to Make Hanging
Pink Tea Affair
Chicago July 28 — Plans to
make a pink tea affair out ot a
hanging bee were thwarted by
Sheriff Chas Peters
The sheriff stated he had
turned down many society wo-
men and other prominent Chica-
goans who asked him for an In-
vitation to witness the hanging
tomorrow ot Curl O Wonderer
who killed his girl-wife and a
ragged stranger he hired to
stage u fuke holdup
“Only the usual number ot In-
vitations will be Issued” said the
sheriff In Chicago where there

Moscow by thousands are said to be

able looting cities and eating all do-
mestic animals Women are taking
a prominent part in the disorders ac-

WHEN HORSE FALLS
Confined to Bed as Result of
Disability Received While
Touring Farm
J S Mabon was injured Wednes-
day when a horse he was riding fell
wrenching Mr Mahon’s hip and in-
juring the ligaments ot his leg Mr
Mabon was visiting on the Mabon
farm near Avant and was making an
inspection tour of -the farm on
horseback The horse either step-
ped in a hole or injured a toot fall-
ing so suddenly that Mr Mabon did
not have time to free himself It
was believed at first his leg was
broken- but a close examination was
made by a physician and the report
given out that no bones were broken
Sir Mabon was in bed Thursday
It Is believed he will be able to be
up by the first of next week

after he had become Intoxicated on

reply to American representations

leaders in the house have virtually
decided to reduce taxes $500000-
000 from the estimate of Secretary of
the Treasury Mellon in order to fore

In furtherance of President Hard-
ing's plan to push tax revision legis-
lation ahead of the tariff about a
dozen house Republican leaders wil'
hold a conference with the president

The two women police claimed

have to flee” Mrs Spurgin said
“We had been living apart tor four
years and I bad not seen Mr Spur-
gin for sometime until the night ot
July 15 when he told us ot the
trouble I had heard stories ot other
women but I could not verify them”
