i RADIUM NOT SEEN IN NATURE
Radium is a metal and is described
as having a white metalic luster It
has been isolated once or twice (ml
few people have seen it Radium is
ordinarily obtained from its ores in
the form of hydrous sulphate chloride
or bromide and it is in the form of
these salts that it is usually sold and
used These are all white or nearly
white substances whpse appearance
is no more remarkable than common
salt or baking powder Radium is
found in nature in such exceedingly
small quantities that it is never visi-
ble even when the material is exam-
ined with a microscope Ordinarily
radium ore carries only a small frac-
tion of a grain per ton of material and
radium will never be found in large
quantity because it is formed by the
decay of uranium a process which is
wonderfully slow and radium itself
decays and changes to other elements
so rapidly that it is impossible for it
to accumulate naturally in visible
masses Minerals that carry radium
however are fairly easy to determine
One of them pitch-blende as gener-
ally found is a black mineral about as
heavy as ordinary iron but much soft-
er The principal radium mineral car-
notlte has a bright canary yellow col-
or and is generally powdery There
are other radium-bearing minerals of
less importance

A good drill strike has been made
by Harry Harris of Baxter and asso-
dates on the Weber ground a half
mile north of Picher The ore body 1
was entered at 215 feet and extended j
to 270 feet showing a 55-foot face that
will assay 37 per cent the prospectors
say This completes the twelfth ’hole 1

be pushed rapidly by sinking two
shafts This work will be easily ac-
complished as no water at all is en-
countered until the ore body is reach- 'J
