Dr S II Bowers visited Kans-
as City the first of the week to
examine into the mental condi-
tion of Rev Will Deatherage of
Waddill who was found upon the
streets of that city ina'demented
condition and had been taken to
Dr Burnett’s private hospital
for treatment- The doctor found
Mr Deatherage at the private
sanitarium of Dr Burnett and in
practically the same condition as
when first found The doctor
found that it would be impracti-
cable to bring Mr Deatherage
homp in fact Dr Burnett said
if the gentleman was moved from
the sanitarium he would have to
be taken to the asylum Dr
Bennett proposed that he would
keep him at his sanitarium for
$1250 a week which is just hall
his regular charge Di Bowers
considered this a very liberal
aiid philanthropic proposition
and hopes to arrange matters so
it can be done Dr Burnett told
Dr Bowers that he thought he
could cure Mr Deatherage in a
few months An effort is being
made to raise the necessary $12-
50 a week to keep Mr Deather-
age in Kansas City The county
court has agreed to give $2-50 a
week and he thinks the Masonic
order of which Mr Deatherage
was a member and the Christian
church in which he was a minis-
ter will raise the balance It is
to be Imped that the funds will be
raised and that Mr- Deatherage
will be properly cared ' for as he

ASSALTED BY
A NEGRO BRUTE
Miss Jordan of Vinita Nar-
rowly Escapes a Brutal
Assault
Saturday's Viuita Chieftain
Miss Carrie Jordan of this city
was assaulted by a negro this morn-
ing Her screams frightened him
away and a crowd of men with
blood hounds are scouring the
woods and country in search of the
villain but as yet have not succeed-
ed in finding him
Miss Jordan is the night girl at
the Pioneer telephone central and
was on her way home from work
about daylight when the incident
occurred Her home is in the
west part of town and it is her cus-
tom to walk down the Frisco track
across the railroad bridge and then
take a lower lane which leads to
the house It was just after she
had left the track that the negro
who had followed her from town
grabbed her from behind and at-
temped to choke her As the morn-
ing was quite cold she had her ears
and throat'heavily wrapped and had
not heard the negro coming up be-
hind her She was only a short
distance from her home and her
sudden screams undoubtedly
frightened her assailant trom carry-
ing out his dastardly deed Miss
Jordon was badly frightened but
kept ner presence of mind and gave
immediate alarm Other people
had seeu the negro following her
but had not suspected anything
wrong
Two colored men who were near
the railroad bridge at the time say
he started south through the tim-
ber along Bull creek
Mr Killgore of White Oak
brought his bloodhounds to town
but they did not show any signs ot
finding a trail in that direction
Other parties went on out on Big
Cabin creek and it is possible that
they may yet capture the culprit
Brain Leaks

In the real home Christmas
comes every day
Some people work hard to
make an easy living
Some men mistake moral dys-
pepsia for complete sanctifica-
tion The man that never forgets
that he was a boy is not very apt
to forget his manhood
The man who is honest simply
because it is the best policy will
bear watching
Some people experience no dif-
ficulty in keeping their left hand
from knowing what their right
doeth
The foolish man carries his
business cares to his fireside and
leaves all his good nature at the
office
The man who is always wait-
ing for something to turn up is
forever complaining about being
turned down
A man never realizes how fool-
ish he once was until he runs
across some of the letters he
wrote to his wife before he mar-
ried her
This is the season of the year
when the man who owns a horse
and does not warm the bridlebits
should be made to stand in the
stall while the horse loafs by the
radiator
While we are mourning the
fact that the young girls of today
are not learning to be housekeep-
ers let us not forget that1 the
young taen are not altogether
successful as house providers

One of the thankless incidents
of an editor's life is for a sub-

and when the editor becoming in

told to stop the paper “cut it
