THE ALINE CHRONOSCOPE
State Affairs
vVhy John Fields Consented to
Run for Governor
For a long time State Government In Oklahoma ha been eorrnpt t The
people learned a little at the truth from the reporta of tBe InvestiKntlng'
Committee of the House In the last Legislature and the notion of the
Okmulgee County Grand Jury At the beginning of the Primary cam-
palgn the State House Gangster fell out among themselves and the
public learned some more from ugly charges which have been flung thick
and fait Things were In a muddle DiMeniioo and strife among candl-
date developed disgust aid distrust among votera 'in all parties Some-
thing had to be done A strong man was sought for Governor The man
was Johd Fields As usual the man moat needed and wanted shrank from
entering politics and bearing the brunt of lies and Blander he knew wonld
come He declined repeatedly until convinced by overwhelming senti-
ment that a crisis in state affairs demanded his entry He Is not a
quitter He consented to become a candidate His ressons for doing so
and the diameter of the man are best shown in his own words So we
are letting John Fields tell it to yon imsclf Here is what he aayai 1
More tban half of my life has
teen spent in Oklahoma
During the 26 years that I have
Jived here I have done nothing else
than try to serve the men women
and children who live on the farms
of the state
From April 1 1S96 to September
1 IflOG I was employed by the Okla-
' homa Agricultural Experiment Sta-
tion For more than two-thirds of
that time I directed its agricultural
and scientific work and managed
the business affairs of the Okla-
homa A & M College
That was while homesteaders
were struggling to establish them-
selves on their “claims” and seek-
ing information which would help
them “g?t by” '
I wasn’t fired from that job I
quit because I felt that I could
serve the farm folks of Oklahoma
with more satisfaction to myself as
editor of a farm paper
That is what I have been doing
for the last 16 years
The Republican State Convention
asked me to be a candidate for
Governor in 1914 I made the cam-
paign told the folks the truth about
the manner In whje-h they were
being hornswoggled and bamfoozlcd
by the State House Gang and after
nearly a month of counting it was
announced that I had lost by 4093
votes
I accepted the result and didn’t
squawk
Politics for the sake of politics
never did appeal to me and I con-
cluded that if the folks liked what
is being done to them I could stand
It
And 60 since the campaign of
1914 I have been attending to busi
ness and lettfng others run for of-
fice I was determined that never
again would I be a candidate for
any office and so stated wherever
and whenever occasion arose
All that I wished was to be let
alone to do the work I like to do
But the present unspeakable state
administration of Oklahoma has
made that work increasingly diffi-
cult to do with any degree of satis-
faction
Harassed and bedeviled on every
hand by a gang of state officers
bankers and attorneys whose only
conception of government is to
make money out of it without
rendering service in return the
people of the state have almpst lost
faith in their ability to govern
themselves
The usual crop of candidates to
perpetuate the State House Gang
sprouted and blossomed with the
springtime A new batch of pana-
ceas was brewed A new lot of
country-savers with the same old'
line of promises appeared
Naturally those citizens who
have consistently opposgd the loot-
ing of the state which has gone
steadily on for 13 years are more
than usually concerned about doing
something to cheek it
Interested with them are many
good citizens who permitted the
state to get Into this trouble hut
who now earnestly desire to get it
out
I said on January 10 1922 that
under no circumstances wu)d I be'
a candidate for Governor and kept
on 6aylng so until April 30
In the intervening period friends
of many years Democrats and So
cialists as well as Republicans
came to see me or wrote and in-
eisted that I had no right to re-
fuse Republican county conventions in
more than half of the counties of
Oklahoma went out of the regular
order of business and adopted reso-
lutions urging me to become a can-
didate Representatives of 47 counties—
more than 900 persons— met in
Oklahoma City on May 1 and de-
manded that I let them nominate
mp at the primary election
They convinced me that if ever
there was a time in any state when
every person should give nil there
is in him In an earnest attempt to
prevent a complete breakdown of
government that time is now aud
that state is Oklahoma
I consented to their request he-'
cause if I lind not done so I would
lave felt all the rest of my life that
I was a quitter
And so- I am the Republican
Nominee for Governor
Having gotten Into it of course I
wish to win
I need the votes of all good
citizens who will put citizenship
above partisanship in the hope that
they may better the governmental
situation in Oklahoma — confident
that they can’t worsen it
As the campaign progresses and
the lies about me personally in-
crease In number and volume re-
member that I am the same John
Fields that you have known for so
many years and that becoming n
candidate for Governor hasn't
changed me
I have the same purposes In seek-
ing to become Governor that X
have always had in my work for
agricultural advancement and de-
velopment In Oklahoma — a firm
determination to do the things
which seem to me best f6r all the
folks
And I am In position to give yott
that kind of service as Governor
I didn’t spend a cent to get th
nomination
I shall personally pay my own
traveling expenses In visiting the
people of all the counties of Okla-
homa before election day and that
is all I shall spend
I have enough funds on hand to
pay these expenses and I do not
owe a dollar
I propose to go through this cam-
paign in such a manner that when I
become Governor I shall be In posi-
tion to Insist that no person get any
money out of the State Treasury ex-
cept for necessary services and ma-
terials honestly and fully per-
formed and delivered
I believe notwithstanding our ex-
perience since statehood that It Is
possible to manage public business
so that the folks will not be sur-
prised when they discover efficiency
in public service
But I realize that I cannot fee
elected without the help of those
who know me
They 'can help most effectively
by getting their friends to vote for
me and urging all to vote
I ask for such help from all whio
have not entirely given up the hope
of establishing In Oklahoma a state
government lor which none need
apologize
