Official Paper of Both the Town and County
“Tlu Call of the Cumberlands” one of the very
bent wrial stories we have ever been able to secure
commences this issue Read the first installment and
tell your friends about it and if they subscribe -you
will have done both them and us a kindness
’Tis almost time to burn the trash clean up the
baik yards and garden spots build or repair fences
and make other improvements For actual making
gardens planting fruit and shade trees shrubbery and
tlowers will soon demand all your spare time
A logical appeal from a Missouri paper: “News
papers induce reading reading stimulates thought
thought promotes activity activity creates wealth
wealth brings case and ease is a stepping stone to
happiness This is a newspaper Do you take it?”
You’ll have to travel a long ways and then meet
with disappointment if you are dissatisfied with your
present location and looking for a better country than
the Arkansas Valley or a better town than Coweta
The may really exist but if so they’re hard to find
An article is going the rounds under the caption
ot "Don'ts for Wives” We don’t publish it because
we don’t believe wives don’t do things for the reason
they were told don’t hut don’t because they already
know better Advice is cheap but lots of people don’t
take it even in tabloid form
If you are looking for a home among good people
come to Coweta and you’ll make no mistake Of
course there’s runts mentally among the many cul-
tured thoroughbreds That’s a condition however to
he expected hut they “cut no ice” in shaping and de-
veloping the town’s civic affairs
Announcements are already appearing in some of
our exchanges’ by candidates for city offices the elec-
tion to he he icK April 6th The present officials of Co-
weta seem to have proven entirely satisfactory to the
people and not a ripple on the political surface has
yet been made on the Coweta pond
It is reported in the World that there is a woman
in Tulsa who offered another woman there $1000000
for her husband was turned down and a suggested
riisi- ot the offer to $2500000 was rejected That
Wife evidently believes that “a bird in hand is worth
two in the brush” and wisely takes no chances
Of course no one is obligated to support his home
papers hut the fact that they expect the papers to boost
tor their town in and out of season without acknowl-
edgment of any kind other than reading to paper that
someone else pays for detracts from their usefulness as
boosters in more ways than one Every town has ’em
hut they are an exception in Coweta
Did you ever notice that most men who are forg-
ing to the trout in a business way are genial broad
men who wear a smiling countenance and that the
“sour-donghs” in any walk of life rarely make a suc-
ci ‘-s and not knowing life think existence hardly
worth living ami become an annoyance if not nuis-
aue to 1 1 ivir friends to say nothing of the general
p Mu Son when you think of your business career
dn’t torget that the “the smile that won’t come off” I
D m important asset Cultivate a cheerful disposi-
tion and make friends by making others feel better be-
cause of your pleasing smile kind word or cordial
howdy-do when you meet them They cost nothing
hut do a world of good
CATALOGUES FLOODING THE MAILS
er lights in the mail order business think that “now’s
the time to advertise” evidenced by the fact that they
are flooding the mails and the country with their cata
logues Speaking of their receipt in Guthrie the State
Register sounds the following warning which people
everywhere should consider carefully:
“There is no use abusing these mail order houses
The thing to do is to convince the farmer that taking
everything in consideration he can buy as cheap at
home buy safer on personal examination of goods
than sight-unseen add that it is to his financial interest
to buy of merchants that directly and indirectly buy of
him and who along with him pay the taxes that makes
the condition of both of them either better or worse to
live under 1
“Business is a continual struggle and in its con-
flict everyone should have a free hand But he is a
poor business man be he farmer or tradesman who
thinks he can buy away from home all lie needs with-
out hurting himself For if he does so does the
other fellow and the result is the impoverishment of
the whole locality
“Some scientist has said if it were possible to re-
move from the continent of America the annual stub-
ble grasses leaves and all that should decay back
again into the soil for three years in succession the
continent would become a barren waste
Something like that happens to the very farms of
a community whose owners act on the misconception
that it pays them to buy from some concern far away
just because this concern can sell to them a little
cheaper at first cost For when freight mail time
interest on money home credit mutual farmer-merchant
interest and nil the elements of neighborly life
arq considered they have not bought cheap they
bought dear A permanent continuation of this policy
would destroy the town and return into a desert waste
the farms near it They would both return to the un-
developed jungle of Africa or South America or former

KEEP OUT OF THE “RED’
Laws rules and regulations for the operation
of banks are growing more and more stringent
all the time The latest is advices from the comp-
troller of the currency the head of the banking
department of the United States which disal-
lows banks to continue the practice of allowing
solvent customers to overdraw their accounts
These instructions are fully set forth in the fol-
lowing letter:
Treasury Department
Washington Jan 28 1915
To the Board of Directors
Gentlemen : — The granting by some banks of
accommodations in the form of over-drafts is ob-
jectionable and can 'not be countenanced1 by this
office ' £-
This practice should cease entirely To facili-
tate the accomplishment of this result the sub-
ject has been taken up by this office with the
banknig departments of various states and these
authorities have generally agreed to take the nec-
essary action to secure the effective co-operation
of State banks in attaining the end desired
You are requested to adopt a resolution direct-
ing that no officer or employee of your bank shall
pay or charge to the account of any depositor any
check of such depositor when thee are not suf-
ficient funds on deposit to the credit of the drawer
of the check to meet the same
Please forward a certified copy of the resolution
to this office as soon as it is adopted Let the
resolution show the names of the directors pres-
ent at the meeting
Please acknowledge receipt without delay
Respectfully
Comptroller
From the above it will be seen that your bank-
er has no further option regarding the matter of
allowing overdrafts Therefore depositors who
have been in the habit of resorting to the practice
of checking before depositing will have to dis-
pense with that form of doing business and be
sure they have money in the bank upon which
checks are drawn before they are executed and
pass from their possession
Coweta bankers are liberal people and love to
accommodate known solvent patrons within the
bounds of conservative banking but this new or-
der closes the avenue for overdrafts and robs you
of the evasion to make a loan or pay a debt by
saying “I’m in the red now”
The price of wheat lias passed the $150 mark and
