NUMBER 34
HELENA HOME TAL-
ENT CHAUTAUQUA
Helena’s First Try at Big Three
Day Chautauqua a Success Like-
ly Another One Next Year
The three numbers of the home
talent chautauqua have been
given and they have demonstrated
the fact that entertainments of
this kind are a success Some mis-
takes have shown up but that
was to be 'expected For instance
the first night program was too
long We all know it now and
this will be remedied in future
efforts of this kind No one can
truthfully say it was not good
Many say it was splendid The
little children and the Camp Fire
girls carried out their work on
stage in a very pleasing way
They trained hard were suecess-
ful and are to be complimented
The only specialty before the rise
of the curtain was a little song
each by Mary Louise Armour
and Frances Virginia Allen who
recited Jack and Jil They came
from the wings on each side met
in the center of the stage and with
shy glances at each other went at
it' They met with hearty ap-
plause They wore the regulation
fairy costumes and were very cute
The first part of the program
was an operetta “The Enchanted
Wood” with a cast of something
like 25 little folks mostly dressed
as fairies ’Thefe was a fairy
queen impersonated by Ruth
( Oakes Mother Goose by Mary
Louise Batman the school teacher
by Muriel Brown Miss Muffet by
Miidred Bonham Mistress Mary
by Thelma Bonham Bo-peep by
Frances Wright Simple Simon by
Sherwood Lawson Boy Blue by
Boyd VanWye Jack Horner by
Paul Kelley Then there were
two maids of honor to the queen
represented by Ada Thompson and
Dorothy Staten the queens train
bearers were little Helen Wilhite
and Opal Walker There were
poppy fairies butterfly fairies a
lot of them and the boy police
force who came to the rescue of
the fairies lost in the enchanted
wood Capt Benny Ballard had
charge of these and the way the
squad went thru with the manual’
of arms was not slow
To those who trained and in-
structed the children much credit
is due The natural ability of the
children to act and mimmic was
quite noticeable When trained
they did splendid work Mrs J
S Gwinn Mrs Ranney Davis and
Miss Vernice Bard were in charge
of them The costumes beautiful
and appropriate were designed by
Miss Mildred Pittman
The Camp Fire girls then staged
“The Returning of Rosalea" a
royalty play of much merit The
leading characters were “Mina” a
half crazy gypsy played by Marie
McCutchan Nita a young gypsy
girl from ‘ the same tribe and
Rosalea a child stolen by the gyp-
sies some fourteen years before
played by Irene Ruley and Blanche
Morris The Kitadini camp fire
girls were represented by their
guardian Miss Thelma Oakes her
daughter' Margarita by Miss
Maurita Pittman and Marie Stone
by Kathryn Johnson The other
campfire girls who participated
were: Vivian Price Viola Martin
Dorothy McCall Irene Griswold
Roberta Jameson Blanche Gano
Ida Lecrone Mabel Thompson
Fay Putnam Thelma Werner and
Mattie Kuykendall Play instruc-
tors were Mrs Roy Wright Mrs
C L Green and Mrs Roy Bick
ford
The second night being design-
ated as “Music Night" and those
who failed to attend missed one of
the rarest of treats in this line It
was one continuous flow of melody
and fun from beginning to end
Mrs Jacobi presided at the piano
and Mrs Parshal gave some very
clever interpretations on her violin
Her readings and sketches were
also very much appreciated The
vocal selections by Roy Wright
Callie Frances Riley Supt Fisher
Miss Vernice Bard and Miss Elda
Welch were splendidly rendered
Surprised Mrs McCollum
Mrs A A McCollum was very
agreeably surprised Saturday
when her mother Mrs Maggie
Brewer and sister and family
Mr and Mrs Noah Head of North
Salem Mo with their children
Lola and Lucille and the baby
arrived without previous notice to
make them a visit Mrs Head
formerly was a student at the
Woods county high school here
and is known to many Helena
people Mr Head is a merchant
at North Salem arid they made
the trip overland in an auto ex-
pecting to surprise their relatives
here

Has Delco Lighting Outfit
Dan Lecrone and family are
now the proud owners of a new
Delco lighting system recently in-
stalled by Ruley and Coleman
Dan will now have more time to
devote to his farm crops and oth-

let the Delco do most of the heavy
work around the house such as
pumping water sawing wood
digging the potatoes milking the
cows and skimming the -milk to
say nothing of furnishing good
lights in every room of the house
and the barn besides Now if
Dan only had a radio outfit so

Dick Return From 0 C
Dick Louthan returned from
Oklahoma City with the members
of the democratic convention
crowd yesterday evening and was
up on the street this morning tell-
ing how it happened Dick is h
versatile and voluble talker and
had a crowd of both democratic
and republican listeners around
him His ’spoondings smacked of
reason but it is not presumed that
he can bring his North Dakota
Jeffersonian brand of the stuff in-
to this locality and make it stick
He may not want to He came to
visit with Mrs Louthan who has
been here for some time visiting
with her parents Mr and Mrs
Gilmer

LOCAL BOYS LOSE TWO
GAMES TO CARMAN
The Helena amateur team went
down in defeat at Carmen Mon-
day before a teamfrom that place
The hoys were considerably mixed
up the regular team not being
avilable only in spots
Several new players were with
the team among them being T
J Hatch and four high school
students and Boyd Couch The
high school students playing were
Granville Pearce Hod Henderson
Paul Stalen Scott Rockwell and
Watson Morris
Players on the regular team
were: Hoot and Pete Gibson Ray
Packard and Ersel Stoalabarger
As Ersel has quit the game he
could be classed as a substitute
and likely was not in regular form
The regular team boys must
needs keep in trim for the hard
work they will be called on to
do when they go to Denver and
another game was matched with
Carmen to be played on the home
grounds here Tuesday which
however was also lost to Carmen
per haps for the same reason It
is understood that a game with a
team from Goltry is to be played
here today
A Correction
Just a moment please Last
week the Star stated that Ray
Bonham had been nominated as
county superintendent on the re-
publican ticket in Garfield county
Just a little mistake that is all
Ray is a democrat and is running
on the democrat ticket

BV GETTING MARRIED
Mr Samuel Ent and Mrs Belle Wadkins
Slipped off to Cherokee and had
toe Knot Tied Friday Aug II
One of the big surprises of the
season came when the marriage of
Mr Samuel Ent and Mrs Belle
Wadkins all living south-west of
town was announced to their
friends No one even knew that
they were “keeping company”
They slipped away lo Cherokee
last Friday and had the knot
tied good and tight and returned
home Sam donned his overalls
with a complacent smile and says
to the dirty dishes “go hang so far
as I am concerned” and Mrs Ent
that was Mrs Wadkins said to the
task of doing the chores and look-
ing after the farm “just let Sam
do it” So matters both matri-
monially economically and socially
have adjusted themselves to the
entire liking of all concerned the
neighbors included
The Star desires to offer the
heartiest congratulations to these
good folks and our very best
wishes for their future happiness
and prosperity
