RUSSEL CAMPBELL’S LETTER
TO THE I’EOrLE OF OKLAHOMA:
M’ letter to Mayor Walton copy at-
tached explains itself rather fully
This letter Will doubtless be criticised
— I have only done for the Mayor what
I would desire that he or another
should do for me under like circum-
stances Already I have met bitter protest
about “bringing this out so close to the
- election" It is yet six weeks until
the election and the Mayor has alrea-
dy had ample time since the writing
of the letter to have thoroughly refut-
ed the statements therein contained if
untrue
No charge of procrastination can
consistently be made against me in this
connection I never knew definitely
that there was such a list until Thurs-
day I secured this list Friday visit-
ed the Institution Friday afternoon
wrote and mailed the letter the first
thing Saturday morning having now
waited 72 hours for some response 1
am calling the matter to the atten-
tion of the public
"Must be keenly interested?” you
say I am but not more so than eve-
ry good citizen should be — certainly
nothing personal
There should be no secrets of this
character between a public official and
his constituents He who asks for our
confidence should give us his There
should be mutual confidence and es-
teem between a governor and his peo-
ple “Have I fully verified these state-
ments?” you say I have not— I can
not I do not have access to the rec-
ords of this institution— ‘‘Our records
are just as private and just as sacred
as the records of a bank” so I am in-
formed and to which I agree I hnve
no grand jury powers no legislative
committee is available nor should
matters of this kind be left for grand
juries and legislative committees to
develop
Mr Walton can make these records
public in 30 minutes — no crime is
charged against him we just want to
knew If he was in possession of hon-
est funds legitimately obtained It
was no crime to invest In the stock of
this institution rather is he to be
commended for “salting down” this
nest egg
This is a worthy institution appar-
ently well managed It pays good
dividends and the stock is non-tax-able
— a good buy I cnll it of which no
man should be ashamed
If this is a campaign canard the
Mayor should rejoice at the opportun-
- ity to expose It and having done so
be' can dismiss Dluty Moore and his
Jazz band cancel his Tulsa conferences
and wait with supreme confidence for
the 7th day of November If this list
is correct then the public have a right
to know the source of the invested
funds
This is not an Impertinent question
to ask a candidate for governor of this
state who has already made advance
preparation for a Fifty Million Uollur
i bond issue at the very beginning of his
‘administration and if all his pledges
arp to be welcomed we may easily an-
ticipate a 'debt of One Hundred and
Fifty Million before bis term shall end
Let those who agree with me that
the public have a right to know Join
‘ in the demand that the record be made
public before we cross the Rubicon
else let us not cross ON THIS
-BRIDGE
CAMPBELL RUSSELL
and others of their ilk These things
make it all the more necessary that the

There is nothing more detestable
than a bushwhacker I am sending
you at once a copy of the list referred
to so that you may hnve an opportun-
ity to refute the statements made
therein if untrue or if true that you
did make these investments yoti may
inform the public where and how you
secured the funds thus invested
I am not unmindful of the fact that
you were a private citizen only tills
letter would be the height of imperti-
nence but considering the position
which you now occupy and the position
to which you aspire the public are
Interested in all thnt pertains to you

Obituary
The whole community felt the shock
of the sudden taking away of Verne
Albert Miller the youngest son of Mrs
Elln Miller widowed two years ago
andjesiding'just south of town on the
Woodmansee place
How deeply the neighborhood sym-
pathizes with the stricken mother and
only brother was seen by the great
concourse of people ‘who attended the
funeral service held In the Christian
church oh Thursday afternoon The
high school attended in a body The
tribute paid to the dead boy by W O
Gardiner his Sunday School teacher
also Professor Rackley principal of
Ch1 rokee School will attest Verne’s
strong home life which came to a
close all too soon in the bud of his
splendid young manhood He met his
death trying to prevent bis compan-
ions from being hurt in the sliding
auto but was himself caught under
the full weight of the overturned car
He was the Joy and pride of his widow- made in writing and the same may be
ed mother tn ml no more dutiful or lov-
ing son than he was to mother could
be found in these parts
Ambition to fit himself for a useful
career he had just entered high school
with great ambition to be the comfort
of the home and make his life help-
ful iu a large way to all about him
He was especially generous and socia-
ble by ’ nntpre making him a favorite
with his many friends and acquain-
tances We with them all realize that
the community is bereaft truly has
Iteon made poorer because of the going
out from us of this young life with Its
rich iMjssibilities which cannot be
realized here To say the least
Verne will be sorely missed by his j
ma ny friends and companions while
everyone’s heart goes out to his dear
striefen mother and only brother'
