$100 A YEAR IN ADVANCE
Everybody is holding their
breath waiting to hear just
how : the proposed war tax is
going to effect their every-day
life necessities It takes money
to prosecute a war and if the
boys are to be in a manner
drafted for service it is only
'fitting that those who stay at
home should help to bear the
burden
t t t t
It now looks as if Col Roose
velt was going to be allowed to
take an army of volunteers over
to the French front Roth
houses of Congress voted to al-
low him to go and the matter is
now up to President Wilson Let
him go and virile manhood that
wish to follow wherever the
Colonel will lead It will do
more to throw fear into the
Kaiser than all other prepare
tions which could be made in a
year

Not enough people paid atten-
tion to the “Clean Up” week or-
dered by Mayor Jones a short
time ago Why not declare a
holiday close all the stores for
part of a day and make a gen-
eral clean-up of the town Soon
warm days will come and the
greater chances for a spread of
diseases Everybody ought to
have pride enough to keep their
premises cleaned up but some
think they are too busy to both-
er with such work but if a half
holiday was declared and all
take a hand in cleaning up it
would not take long and all
would feel better for their ef-
forts t t t t
LATER OIL DOPE
Since writing the oil news on
the front page word comes that
the drillers at the well on the
Davison place have passed
through a 37-foot sand strata
and the driller who hasd rilled
in most of the fields in Okla-
homa and in other states says
that the strata is of the same
character and general outlines
of oil-bearing 'sands but in no
place had he ever heard of such
a thick strata at so shallow
depth as found in that well It
makes the outlook seem very
promising The strata carried

of hope in everybody that an
oil sand will be found at a lower
depth and is considered a good
indication to base that hope

TESTING” CREAM
In testing cream it seems to
be the opinion of some that it
does not make any difference as
to whether th£ sample is meas-
ured with the pipette or weigh-
ed on the scales As for my
own personal observation I find
it does make quite a difference
more so if the cream is very
thick and tests high in butter-
fat In testing cream for commer-
cial purposes it should always be
weighed on a pair of sensitive
Torenson balance scales weigh-
ing either 9 or 18 grams
Why is it necessary to weigh
instead of measure the cream 7
The inaccuracy 'of the pipette
is due to three things:
1 The specific gravity
2 The amount of cream that
sticks to the pipette after emp-
tying 3 It has a tendency to con-
tain an amount of air bubbles
All of these tend to lower the
test
The writer prefers to use the
6-inch 50 per cent bottle as it
is a little easier to handle and
does not use as much cream and

It should be the 'aim of any
one testing cream to be as care-
ful and painstaking as possible
for it is a matter of dollars and
cents and' should be clone with
the utmost care
All tests should bo read at
120 degrees F If red too hot
the test will be too high
A difference of 60 degrees F
may give a difference of 2 per
cent in the test As ' soon as
the test is read empty the con-
tents in an acid jar and shake
the bottle well so the sediment
wjjl not stick to the bottom The
bottle should then be washed

MILITARY PRACTICE
y The sound of "Left” “Left”
is heard most any evening on
the streets the boys around
town having organized a “Home
Guard” company for the study
of military tactics Glynn Brown
and Alver Durbon are instruct-
ing the boys in the work and
are making a very noticeable
improvement in the attitude of
the boys as they stand in the
ranks About forty arc now
members of the organization
and increasing in number each
night These boys will march
in the Decoration Day parade
and fire the military salute at
the graves on that day When
the selective draft comes these
boys will be fairly well trained
in the usual tactics and no
doubt will receive credit for
their advanced work

IRISH NAMES
If your name is Murphy it
means that you are “superior”
for that is the derivation of the
word just as Kelly came from
O’Kelly Kiely Keeley meaning

Dougherty from OC Do-

all Irish names at the first stage
in their history had “O” before
them the first change consist-
ing of dropping that “O” Sul-
livan was originally Sillifant
and Sullivant meaning “quick-
