- From Mexico jf Bandit to Dead
El Paso April 17 — Francisco Villa
is dead and bis body disinterred some
days after hie buriel is in possession
of the Carranza troops according to
a series of telegraphic messages re-
ceived in Juares yesterday by the
Mexican officials-
For more than a week report! that
Villa had died from wounds have been
currentboth here and in Juares To-
day’e accounts were tne most circum-
stantlal and apparently reliable ones
yet received They - were accepted
with reserve by American officials
Including General George Bell Jr but
-the Mexican officials expressed confi-
dence in -their reliability The mes-
sages in the order in which they were
received were as follows: -
"The dispatcher of the - Mexican
Northwestern railroad at Juares re-
' ported to General Gabriel Gavira Car-
ranza eomxnander at Juares that he
had heard a conversation over the
telegraph wires to the effect that Vil-
la’s body was in the hands of Carran-
la troops
1 General Gavira notified Consul Andres-
Garcia here who rushed mes-
sages to the telegraph operator at Ha-
dent and Cuslhulriachic asking for
confirmation i"
‘ - The Madera and Custhulrtacblo op-
erators answered confirming the re-
port and stating the body was being
taken to Chihuahua
The telegraph operator at San An-
tonio fifty miles west of Chihuahua
telegraphed Consul Garcia that Villa’s
body was In possession of Colonel Car-
los Carransa nephew of General Car-
ranxa who was taking it in a special
train to Chihuahua
- In reply to these messages tele-
grams were sent to the Carransa gen-
erals In the field and officials in Mex-
ico City Chihuahua and other points
asking confirmation but no answers-
have yet been received Apart from
the telegrams sent here there are
some known facts which have been
pointed out by Mexican officials sa
lending strong support to the report
that the bandit - dhlef’s career bad
been dosed by death 1 -
The facts are: That Villa had been
suffering for more than a year from
a virulent form of blood poisoning He
was treated for this disease while in
Juares by one of the best known phy-
sicians in El Paso ’
’ The physician stated that the con-
dition of the bandit was such that
even a minor wound would be fatal in
ten days unless treated promptly and
with the beet medical skill and care
Even under the most favorable condi-
tions such a wound would be of the
gravest character
- It is certain that If Villa was wound-
ed he could not have commanded any-
thing but the most primitive treat-
ment Another message from Chihuahua
City received here today stating that
rioting had broken out there was re-
garded as in a measure confirmatory
ot the bandit’s death Villa is known
to have had numerous sympathisers
among the lower Glasses in the city
and It was considered probable that
their sympathy would take the form
of violence if they learned the body
of their hero - was being brought to
Chihuahua to be exhibited as that of
a criminal
A point upon which the greatest em
pbasls is laid is: ' Nothing positive
has been known of Villa sines the bat-
tle at Guerrero at which time reports
of his being wounded were accepted
by General Pershing and other Amer-
ican officers If he had continued
south as was assumed he must by this
time have reached either Torreon or
Durango City in which event some
news of his movements would almost
positively have become known

7" Unqualified Statement If Villa

Washington April ' 17 — American
troops will be withdrawn from Mexico
immediately if Francisco Villa is dead
Administration officials made this unqualified-
statement last night com-
menting on reports from Mexican
sources that the bandit’s - body - nad
bean discovered and was being taken
from Cusl to Chihuahua City by spe-
cial train- - - -
- Neither the state nor war depart-
ment had any confirmatory advices on
yie subject from American sources -
Prepared to Treat With Carranxts
- ’ ' f
Washington' April 15--The' United
States is prepared to treat with Gen-
eral Carransa as proposed in his note
of yesterday for the withdrawal of
American -troops from Mexico Pend-
ing the outcome of the diplomatic ne-
gotiations however the statue of the
expedition will remain unchanged and
the pursuit of Villa continue: - This
was the situation as offiieally stated
after President Wilson and hie cabi-
net had considered the new phases ot
the Mexican problem-" ' -
Confirmed By War Department
Mexlca City April 17— Villa’s dead
body has been dug up out of a two-weeks-old
grave by Carlos Carransa
nephew of General Carransa the first
chief of the Constitutionalists and is
now being brought by him and an es-
cortof soldiers to the city of Chihua-
hua 1 This information waa- contain-
ed in a telegram received by the was
department yesterday afternoon -
- Ban-’ Antonio Tex -April 16— Just
what precautionary steps have been
taken by General Funston to further
guard -the -line of communication and
to meet any-eventuality were not re-
vealed — ' -
He received during the day no new
Instructions from the war department
It was admitted here he now has al-
most full authority to use his own
judgment in meeting any situation
even to sending into Mexico all the
19000 troops along the border but
the Incident at Parral has not caused
him or his staff officers to alter their
opinion that it would be unwise to
draw upon that fores tor support ot
the punitive expedition leaving un-
guarded portions of the long Interna-
tional boundary line Short of a war
measure General Funston would hesi-
tate to use the railroad! between Chi-
huahua and the border without author-
ity from i Washington' and - no such
authority has been given him it was
authoritatively stated today at his
headquarters -
- The Americans on whom thei Mexi-
cans at Parral firad wars unarmed
according to an unconfirmed Version
of the Incident current in Chihuahua
today According to this story forty
of the troopers entered Parral presum-
ably to purchase supplies aud were
fired upon Two were killed and the
remainder retreated to the main body
of troops encamped outside the city
The attacking force pursued them and
were met by a fire from the Ameri-
cans who were using a machine gun
killing forty Mexicans
According to this story the attack-
ing party were comprised of Carransa
soldiers and civilians
The report of the Parral incident
was sent from Chihuahua to General
Bell at El Paso who forwarded it to
General Funston Full allowance was
given by department officers to Con-
sul Letcher’s qualifying words "un-
confirmed version that waa ourrenL”
in Chihuahua but there was manifest-
ed a disposition to credit the report
1 Many ot the officers at - headquar-
ters here regarded the story as more
probable than some Ot the version
that have come out ot Mexico It waa
pointed out that In previous cases sol-
diers had entered towns tor the pur-
pose of buying supplies and had been
received In a friendly manner by the
residents and that If'thoy had gone
into Parral for that purpose It was
prsbabls that they war unarmed
