FROM BOKCHITO
We reprint the following from a
clipping handed us taken from some
paper published In Bokchito the name
of which we were unable to learn:
“Rev A C Pickens the new
Methodist minister for this pastorate
for the present conference year filled
his pulpit here Sunday night The
ndw divine preached two able
sermons which were highly appre-
ciated by large congregations He
came up from Bennington on Satur-
day morning and spent the day
among our people who gave him a
warm and hearty welcome making
him feel at home In the splendid
town of Bokchito He was greeted
by a large congregation both day and
night Bro Pickens was accompan-
ied to his new charge here by his
wife and sons all of whom enjoyed
their stay among the good people Af
Bokchito
Bro Pickens is an able divine
and( preached Sunday at 11 and at
night to large and appreciative audi-
ences He delivered able and help-
ful sermons both day and night prov-
ing that he is well fitted for the im-
portant charge entrusted to him
Bro Pickens has been roundly com-
plimented for the heroic Christian
stand he took Sunday that the true
and good Christians from any church
would find a welcome happy home
with God in Heaven Noble senti-
ment — from a noble and able min-
ister May Bro Pickens live long to
preach such telling sermons as that
delivered in the Methodist church in
Bokchito last Sunday”

TROUBLE WITH THE PEOPLE
Merchants and newspapers are al-
ready urging the people to do their
shopping early and avoid the rush
but the chances are that as uspal
the greater part of the shoppers will
depend upon their neighbors to take
the advice and the Christmas rush
will be as great as ever — Ada News
Maine Destroyed by Mine
Says Examining Board
- -
Washington Dec 8 — The United
States battleship Maine which sank
beneath the waters of Havana har-
bor in February 1898 as the result
of an explosion was blown up from
the outside This was announced
Friday by the naval board which has
been examining the wreck The find-
ing confirms the report of the origi-
nal investigators who made a super-
ficial examination of the wreck short-
ly after the disaster The statement
given out by the navy department is
brief Secretary Meyer does not be-
lieve it is necessary to Issue any ex-
tended expatriation of the board’s
conclusions beyond the flat statement
that an external explosion was re-
sponsible The statement follows:
"The board finds that the Injuries
to the bottom of the Maine were
caused by the explosion of a charge
of low form of explosives exterior
to the ship between frames 28 and
31 strake B portstde
“This resulted in igniting and ex-
plodlng the contents of the Bix-inch
reserve magazine A-14-M said con-
tents including a large quanlty of
black powder The more or less com-
plete explosion of the contents of
the remaining forward magazine fol-
lowed The magazine explosion re-
sulted in the destruction of the ves-
sel” Secretary Meyer announced that
there might be a further statement
on the report of the board after it
had been considered by the presi-
dent One member of the board was
of the opinion that the report never
would be published In full but would
be kept in the confidential archives
of the navy department
The declaration that "a low form
of explosive” was used in the out-
side explosion indicates a belief that
a mine and not a dirigible torpedo
was the instrument of destruction
This only deepens the mystery
