Denton would reach here
A letter frdm the War Depart-
’ ment under date of Dec 15th
addressed to Mr R 0 Denton
says: '
“In reply to your wire of the
12th inst addressed to the War
Department and referred to this
office for reply you are advised
- that the body of your late son

39th Infantry has not been ship--r'ped
from' overseas and that it
will remain in France as per
' your present wishes
“The Department wishes to
renew its previous expression of
sympathy in your bereavement"

Mrs Martha Steels
Mrs Martha Steele died in this
City last Thursday Dec 16 after
an illness of some time with
stomach trouble and complica-
tions Burial was in Green Hill
cemetery Friday afternoon Rev
C W Young conducting the ser-
vice Mrs Steele was" born in
Georgia March 1 1862 making
her 58 years of age at death
Her husband T N Steele died
last February and a son died
three or four years ago One
son Beulah- Steele of this city
survives ' She was one of those
gentle motherly kind of women
—the kind that are loved in life
and missed when they are gone

Answering the -above invita-
tion a large crowd gathered at
the Francis home Monday even-
ing and with them celebrated in
grand style their crystal wedding
anniversary Occasional show-
ers during the afternoon and ev-
ening made it a bad night out-
side but no one present regrett-
ed having braved the elements
Christmas decorations prevail-
ed throughout the house and lent
charm to the festivities
Contest after contest was en-
gaged in— bringing merriment
and occasionally a wrinkled
brow when trying to think of ( a
certain word Games were
played— games that reminded
you of by-gone days— games that
made one forget the serious cares
of life and have a hearty laugh
At the conclusion of the games
a palatable repast of chicken sal-
ad cheese straws cranberry jel-
ly pickles celery fruit cake
with cream and hot chocolate
was served
The guests then were ushered
into a room where a prettily dec-
orated Christmas tree stood
which held a gift for each one
present The sack also contain-
ed your fortune in rhyme which
each one read aloud to the merri-
ment of all
The celebration was nicely
planned and delightfully ' carried
out It was a source of much
pleasure to all who were there
and on leaving all expressed the
thought that Mr and Mrs -Francis
are charming entertainers
and the wish that they might
live to see many more happy an-
niversaries ' ’

Miss Vesla Hooper Dies
It was with ’ deep regret that
Davi friends learned of the
death of Miss' Vesta Hooper
which occurred at McAlester last
Saturday
Miss Vesta was a teacher in
the Kiowa school 15 miles south
of McAlester On Dec 11th
she and other teachers arrang-
ed to make an auto trip to
McAlester Before starting
she complained of not feeling
well but decided to go On
reaching the city hpr condition
was such that a doctor was call-
ed and he called in another
physician and they decided her
ajlment was a malignant type of
appendicitis She was operated
upon that afternoon lingered a
week and died Dec 18th at 11 p
m
The funeral was held at Nor-
man Monday where her parents
Dr and Mrs I W Hooper lie
Miss Vesta was a bright
noble girl and made friends
wherever she went She taught
at Hennepin one year and at Sun-
shine three years She was a
success as a teacher and We are
informed was greatly liked at
Kiowa where she taught the
fifth grade She had so endear-
ed herself to the people of Kiowa
that they were perfectly lovely
to her while she was in the sani-
tarium at McAlester
She is survived by her parents
six sisters and one brother She
had a host of friends in Davis
all of whem are saddened at her
untimely death The Hooper
family resided in Davis a dozen or
more years moving to Norman
about a year ago
News From the Oil Field

Lots of talk the past week
j about the Davis oil field and the
prevailing opinion js that a real
oil field is to be brought in soon
No information as to progress in
the wells on the Wolf farm is
being given out
The work of setting the casing
in the Choate well is practically
completed
In the Cornhusker well drill-
ing has been resumed
Mr Moriarty has gone to his
home at Sapulpa for Christmas
R L Freeman returned yes-
terday from Southern Texas
where he went to see a big gas
well just brought in by a com-
pany in which he is interested
The gasser is located about fiO
miles below- San Antonio and
tests 60 million cubic feet of gas
daily Other Davis men inter-
ested in the well are 0 M

Anderson Shirley is another
“Davis( boy” who is making good
in the commercial world and his
host of Davis friends are proud
of him He holds a position as
land appraiser in the valuation
department of the Missouri Pac-
fic railroad company with head-
quarters at St Louis Davis
friends congratulate him on the
step he has just taken in life
and hope the future holds rich
blessings for him and his charm-
ing bride

Aldrich were here last Friday
night at a meeting at city hall
called for the purpose of inter-
esting Murray county farmers in
the Oklahoma Cotton Growers’
Association
Another meeting has been
called for Monday the 27th It
is announced that a representa-
tive of the Cotton Growers’ As-
sociation will b£ present to tell
what the association proposes to
do and how
The Cotton Growers Associa-
tion seems to be meeting with
ready favor by the farmers and
business men of the cotton belt
and the association is growing
by leaps and bouncl Its object
is to sell the cotton crop of its
members in a co-operative way
insuring the best possible returns
to the producer
The secretay states that over a
thousand Garvin county farmers
have already joined and others
