JET GIRLS WIN-BOYS LOSE
By defeating the rlrl inm from
Alva High School Saturday night the
iocai ream won ine championship cnp
given by the Northwestern Normal
School at Alva The score of the game
was 15 to la in
the boys' division Jet was less
fortunate and In the finals matched
with the fngt Laverne team they met
defeat by the score of 16 to 22
The opening round of the girls' meet
inina jei matcnea with Sharon Kans
In a hard fast game Sharon lost by a
core of 20 to 16 Goldle Valentin
captain of the team had her left wrist
sprained In thie game but after ban
dnging it she continued playing altho
greatly Handicapped i
Vlci and Jet played - the second
round In what proved to be the roueh
est hardest fought girls' game seen
dnrlng the meet Both teams were
playing good ball and determined to
win the tournament At the end of the
game the score was tied 19 to 19 and
two extra S-mlnute periods were play
ed before Jet succeeded in forging
ahead with a two-point lead The fl
nai fcore was 23 to 24
The ylctory over Vlci placed Jet In
the finals with Alva The game was
too loosely played on both- sides to be
Interesting and foaling was frequent
A large part of the trouble was due to
the referee's not holdlnr Mm teams fa
real backet ball rather than allowing
them to use football tactics It was
hard fought and a close game through-
out At the close of the first half Alva
lead 11 to 10 but In the second hnlf
the locals forced ahead and flnnllv
came off victorious with a three point
lead 10 to 19
Bon' Game
' In the boys' division Jet started the
tournament matched with Vlci -This
was an easy game for the locals who
won 61 to 13 Saturday morning they
Played Helena and again defeated their
old-time rivals The score was 45 to
The third round found Jet and Cher-
okee matched Cherokee was after re-
venge for their defeat here two weeks
ago and put tip a hard stic fight The
play was fait throughout and Cherokee
made a good bid for vtctorv but the
locals hit their stride 1b the last half
and won 37 to 43
While Jet was eliminating Cherokee
Laverne easily defeated Mutoal leav
ing jet and Laverne for the finals
Over-confidence was probably the big-
gest factor in our boys' defeat bv La
verne In no game this sea f on- has the
team been held to seven flnnl w1
The ball was in Jet's possession fully
nair we time but rumbles at critical
periods poor goal rhots from the con
- ter of the court contributed toward
rneir aereat Laverne played a fast
clean came Credit must he riven them
for having one of the fastest teams Jet
nas played this season but hard luck
and poor playing were a lnrrer factar
in the boys' defeat than the ability of
cne laverne team
The boys and clrlp renart that thev
were treated royally by the people of
Alva during their three days' stay

CLEAN UP TIME IS HERE
Dr A R Lewis State Health Con
'lean-up" campaigns are beginning
now to start in earnest throughout tho
state During the next few week? and
until hot weather sets in is the logical
time to do Spring cleaning
Some of the cities and larger towns
have planned to spend one whole week
"cleaning up" Most of the municipal-
ities however will center their effort -on
one day Additional men aud wa-
gons have been procured tohaul away
the unusually large amount of tin canr
and rubbish which It is expected will
be piled on the rear of the lots and
In the alleys
To encourage the younger folk to
also take part In the Spring "over-
hauling" one of the state's progressive
little cities la offering a (how ticket
to the boy or girl who wll bring in 25
tin cana on "clean-up" day '
Another city that has always been
noted for its civic pride will give cash
prizes ranging from $40 down to IS
for the best kept premises during the
summer Such prlneo are of course
not of much moment when considered
purely from the standpoint of their in
trinsic worth but they add a ew aest
to an old duty and better still they
create a spirit of friendly rlvalnry that
is worth untold dollars to the morale
and health of a community
If your town or city hasn't planned
'clean-up time It should do so at
once '
Spring Is here— and so is "Clean up
Day"

some Implements were a total loss
It Is not known whether or not in

The high wind of the past week or
more has caused considerable concern
about the wheat Kansaa reports say
that great damage was done to the
growing wheat and several farmers In
this vicinity bave became a bit pessi-
mistic over the outlook but on the
whole the reports show that the wheat
is standing up well under the wind
storms and with a little rain soon will
make a fine stand The more optimis-
tic point out that while the wind
have dried the soil still it has not dam- 1
awed the wheat greatly and with a
little rain which will surely come in
the next few "weeks will make wheat
prospects boom - Besides a wheat crop
is never a failure before it is threshed

Shall We Beautify the Tchool
Grounds?
In order that the school grounds
may be made more attractive a limit-
ed number of shade trees ornamental
trees and thrubscanbeused this year
A permanent record is being kept of
all contributions made to the school
Mr Almond is taking care of these
records in the same orderly manner
that hn Innks alter nthitr things about
the school building hence anyone
makinr contributions such gifts can
be exactly located at any time in the
future unless the records should be
destroyed
Soft maple white lm or oatalpa
alternated with arbor vita or some
hardy evergreen are agreed upon as
being good trees for a school yard
Those 'who wish to assist in this
work by donating trees should see
Mr Almond at once as It la now time
that trees should be set out
