"WHEN KNIGHTS WERE BOLD"
Days of the Tournament and the Joust
Must Have Been Soma Pretty
Lively "Scrape"
The national sports of Europe were
for a long time confined to tourna-
ments and jousts most of which were
participated in by nobility with the
king as spectator
The tournaments saw companies of
from five to a dozen knights ranged
against each other In the field with
Judges to see that the regularly set
rules be observed The plan of each
contestant was to unhorse the other
by a blow with a blunt lance received
full from In front A knight thrown
by a aide blow was considered the vic-
tor In that it showed poor horseman-
ship on the part of the other
The Joust was entirely different
from the tournament being virtually
a duel and usually a fight to death
Knights seeking to fasten themselves
to a saddle and thus save themselves
from being thrown were deprived of
knighthood The knight was permitted
to wear an outer garment over hit? ar
mor thus lending a gay appearance to
the contending forces
Civic Pride
"But this town has no civic beauty'
said the critical visitor
"It doesn't need any" said the sat
isfied business man "In my eyes
there's nothing more beautiful than
miles of factories In operation and
hundreds of big smokestacks belching
smoke day and night Why sir every
time I get a flake of soot on my face
or my collar I wear it as a proud
badge of prosperity" — Birmingham

"I accompanied the guns In the after-

"The hero of Waterloo was a very
wild shot After wounding a retriever
and later on peppering a keeper's
gaiters he sprinkled the bare arms of
an old woman who chanced to be
washing clothes at her cottage win-
dow 'My good woman' I said this
ought to be the proudest moment of
your life You have had the distinc-
tion of being shot by the duke of Wel-
lington' - Her face was
wreathed in smiles as the contrite
duke slipped a gold coin Into her

Wellington shared his weakness as
a poor shot with Napoleon whose sole
bag was a dog the only time he went
out game shooting

Paris — Kurt von Lersner head of

returned to Premier Miller and the
list containing the names of Oermaiisi
whose extradition is demanded by the
allies which was handed to him last
week and haa informed the premier
that he has resigned and la leavlnf
for Berlin by the first train
Baron von Lersner told the Asso-
ciated Press his decision was In line
with the attitude he had malntined
throughout regarding the question of
extradition He declared he had held
that no German officials could be In-
strumental In carrying out the extra-
dition clauses of the treaty and con-
sequently the-matter having come up
In a definite Anal form there was
nothing left for htm to do but to
resign and go borne
Dr Wllhelm Mayer German charge

Instructions to accept the allied note
The ambassadors' council has con-
firmed its decision not to publish th
names of those Germany Is asked to
surrender but it includes in addition

Firmness Necessary
In French official circles It was ex-
plained the feeling was that despite
the general Indifference on the extra-
dition question manifested by th' pub-
11c there was an Important reason
why the allies should insist upon ex-
tradition The Impression Is strong
In official French quarters It was de-
clared that the Germans are disposed
to make use of every possible pretext
to avoid the execution of not only th
extradition clause in the treaty but
other clauses and that If the allies
gave way on this point it would be
considered in Berlin as a precedent
on which to found demands for fur-
ther modifications

How Many Women Are Like This?
Can anything be mora wearing for women than the ceaseless
round of household duties? Oh I the monotony of it all—
work and drudge no time to be sick tired ailing yet can-
not stop There comes a time when something " snaps " and
they find themselves "simply worn out" and to make matters
worse have contracted serious feminine disorder which almost
always f ollows the constant overtaxing of a woman's strength
Then they should remember that there Is no remedy like
Lydla E Pinltham's Vegetable Compound— the expo
rlence of these two women establishes that fact I
