The Shaltuek Monitor and the
Gage Republican under the heading
of “The Capital Throws Fits” and
“Our answer to a Misleading
Charge” devote a column each in
their respective capers in trying to
defend the action of the Socialist
and Republican members of the
Board of County Commissioners
for letting the printing to the high-
est bidders by throwing mud at the
EUis County Capital and both
make statements that they cannot
verify by the County Records
Mrs Ilawkins says that the Capi-
tal printed 000 tax cards that
should have cost the county $0100
with reasonable amount of profit
but that said cards did cost the
county $14000 and by making this
charge that Ihe Capital grafted the
county out of $4900
She also states that we charged
' the county commercial rates or in
other words ($400 per thousand)
for 10 inch envelopes
Now than the Captain who is a
little bit smoother than Mrs Ilaw-
kins and knows that the statement
she made cannot be verified puts it
a little bit different lie says the
job cost $14900 and that we should
have only received $8300 He also
hints that we charged the County
" $400 for printing 500 10 inch en-
velopes Now that is just like Cap
everybody knows that ho cant tell
any tiling without stretching it
We presume that the same person
that told Mrs' Ilawkins of this
wonderful graft that the Capital
had been getting from tbo County
also informed the Captain but the
Captain could’nt resist the temptat-
ion to stretch it $900 more than

what Mrs Ilawkins claims was the
original cost and knock off $000
from what Mrs Ilawkins says
would have been a reasonable price
Now -Mr Tax-payers dont you
really think that if I had ' ever
over charged the County the amount
that these two papers say" I have
that they would get the number of
my claims the date allowed and
for what allowed and publish it so
that every tax-payer in Ellis Coun-
ty W'ould know it But they know
and if they dont know they should
heforo they publish such a false-
hood that the records will not hear
them out -
Regarding the tax cards the facts
are: — That I furnished and' printed
0000 post cards for the County
Treasurers office on the 24th day of
August 1914 for which I charged
the County $7800 or $1300 per
thousand which was the price Mr
Bcum tliarged the County and
which Mrs Hawkins says in her
last weeks paper was a reasonable
charge aiul which price also the
Shaltuek Monitor and Gage Rep-
ublican has the contract for print-
ing tax cards for this year
Now as to the 10 inch envelopes
we know nothing about this charge
which Mrs Ilawkins says we charg-
ed legal rates for and ihe Captain
hints that we charged $400 for
500 But if these tw'o defenders of
the public’s rights will inform their
400 readers in "Ellis County -on
what date this elaini was filed the
pubilo will have something' to go
by and can look this matter up
Now for the sake of an argumeut
lets say that what the Gage Rep-

we have grafted the County out of

this as the reason why the Board

In conclusion I want to say that
I will give $2500 to any person

ITALY MUST HELP

Rome Sunday Feb 14 — The
Idea Nazionale a newspaper pub-
lished in the interest of the Nation-
alist Party in its issue of today
publishes a forecast of German pro-
posals to Italy which reads as f ol-
lows: “Before the end of February
Prince Von Buelow the German
ambassador to Italy will present to
the Italian participation in the war
on the side of Germany This con-
sists of the cession by Austria of
the province of Trent and the recti-
fication of the eastern Italian fron-
tier by the addition of a strip of
land going as far as the Isonzo Riv-

herself to conclude a new treaty
with Italy which will afford protec-
tion to Italy’s Medeiterranean inter-
ests “In exchange Italy is to take
part at on6e in the war She will
occupy Tunis audhelp Turkey drive
the English from Egypt which
will return under the dominion of
the Sultan of Turkey In addition
the Italian fleet will attack the
Anglo-French naval forces in the
Mediterranean”
Continuing the Idea Nazionale
says that Prince Von Buelow re-
ferring to Triest made this state-
ment: “It is impossible to give
Triest to Italy because this seaport
is the lung not of Austria but of
Germany”
At the conclusion of one of his
conversations with the Italian states-
men Prince Von Buelow according
to this newspaper made use of this
phrase:
“Either Italy will be friendly to-
wards us or we will treat her worse
than we are treating England”
