Jfadfi Stiffed Even Her Breath at
"The Lady's" Approach.
THE diclf of high-heeled ihoes
came swiftly down the hall and
then the tail magnificently built
figure of the woman I had seen in
the cafe upon the night of my poor
father'i "celchration dinner" was lil-
houetted for an instant against the
dim light she had left. I was holding
t-the pall - like euit.iins of the alcove
with firm hand determined that no
tremor of them should awaken the
woman's suspicion of my presence but
equally determined that the tiny
tin- room
I do not know iT anv other woman
fjif Lillian who ouUI not .have
sci earned or exclaimed at that sudden
flare of Iik'h that glimpse of the
strangers in her apartment which met
her eyrs. Hut she uttered no stream
said no word of protest or exrlamt-
tion. Unlv one nun klv drawn sibilant
breath betraved anv emotion out of
the ordinary.
The next instant her hand hail shot
to the electric wall switch and the
room was suddenly plungid into dark-
ness. I heard no click of her heels
even no rustle of the pall-like cur-
tains but I felt their movement is
they were softly yet deftly pushed
open and then the lithe figure of the
woman stood in the alcove with me
so near that I could have put out
hand and touched her.
She had barely reached sanctuary
however when Allen Drake's voice
drawled slowly coolly:
"Come on Now."
"It's no use Marv Marie Susan
Suianne Mme. Knhtnetti Mrs. Jane
Kohbins. If you try any tricks your
little Raines are up. If you come out
of that alcove and let us have a ijuict
little cimtidc ntial chat you may tie
able to wear something else besides
striped gingham for the next few
years."
He plaved the electric flashlight
upon the floor being careful to kfep
its rays from the corner of the alcove
where I was standing fairly holding
my breath for fear my presence would
be betrayed to the woman Handing
so tensely with her hand gripping the
curtains. I felt an unreasoning fear
of her even although the presence o' S
Allen Drake and Lillian Underwood i S
assured me ample protection. 1 S
"Come on now he adjured his r
voice a trifle sharper. "I'm liable t'
get peevish in a minute for my time E
is valuable. Just come over here j 5
where it'a much more comfortable
than where you are."
I heard another deep drawnreath
knew that 'the woman was bracing
irrsclf fur the inevitable- Theii she
parted the curtains and advanced
toward Mr Drake her path marked
uncannily bv the glow of his flash-
light. As she came toward him Lil-
lian stepped softly toward the cur-
lairs and stood with her bark to
them deftly closing the opening
.iRain.
Simply Refal.
Then and only till then did Mr.
Drake more toward the electric wall
switch. As he turned it on. the wortnn
looked him up and down with mag
nificent scorn then turne.1 tbe I .me
disdainful glance on Lillian.
"So!" she said.
I bjve never heard so much con-
tempt and hatred crowded into
single mcmviyllable beiore.
She evidently braced herself for the
reply but booth Allen Drake and Lil
lian I'nderwood are versed in psy
chology. Neither of them uttered
syllable simply looked at hef coolly
appraisingly wailed for her to speak
again.
"Well ! '. she demanded alter wait
ing a long moment. hat are you
and what do you want? Money an J
mv few jewels I suppose. 1 must lay
I do not remember your faces al
though I suppose I could find them
in the rogurs' gallery."
She was simply regal in her man-
ner. I saw Allen Drake look his admira-
tion of her coolness but still he aaid
no word.
