The loafers are a pretty slick set of fellows They generally
around those who do not advertise and as a consequence they are
disturbed much by customers The loafers understand their business
better than some merchants
Next Monday the public schools open up Everything
garnished and in running order and all that are eligible are
Boys and girls be there the first day its the best day in all
don’t miss it but make the first days enrollment the greatest in
tory of the schools
The place that gives a man his living is entitled to his best efforts
to advance everything calculated to benefit the place and the community
No man has a right to live in a live town who seeks to enrich himself
and not actively identify himself with its interests To be classed as a
drone or chronic kicker and opposed to every measure believed to be for
the good of the citizens is a stigma that should attach to no man in the
corporation
One of our ladies invited a few’ friends in to dinner the first of this I Ellis County
ss
week The hostesses insisted that one of guests take another plate of
pork and beans ‘‘Why” he said “I’ve had two already but it’s really
such nicely cooked pork and beans I believe I will take another plate”
“Ma’s won!” exclaimed the little boy at his side: “Ma’s won! She said
she’d bet a dollar you’d make a hog of yourself if you came”
WHY THIS EFFORT?
Wiiy all this effort at getting an education? Why all this spend-
ing of money erection of buildings employment of teachers? What is
to be gained? Is it to make a scientist w’ho can go forth into the w’orld
and by his knowledge be able to control the elements and bring them
subservient to man? No not this
Is it to produce men and women who can go forth into the field of
Art and be able to chisel from marble or draw on canvas pictures as
grand as those of Michael Angelo or a Raphael? No not this
Is it to send forth men and wromen equipped with everything that
goes to make them intelligent who are able to answ’er every question as
to the construction of our universe and its age? No not this is the
end of true education
The object of the education of our country the object of the common
schools of our land is to produce men and women endow’ed w’ith every ele-
ment that will assist to make themselves and the world better Endow-
ed w ith every thought that will assist mankind in more thoroughly and
systematically w’orking out the end for which they wrere erected
You remember the saying of Ralph Waldo Emerson that the prime
object of education is to produce men and women That does not mean
walking machines that does dot mean intellectual machines but that
means men and women who have hearts as w'ell as minds who look bey-
ond the material things of this w’orld and look to humanity and to God
tor the elevation and betterment of mankind
The common schools of our country are its foundation stones boys
and girls today are attending the schools of our land who never will or
can enter any higher course According to the census of 1890 there
were over fourteen million boys and girls attending the public schools of
our land and not twro per cent of that number have ever graduated from
our seminaries and colleges in any one year Then how necessary is it
that the common school system of our country should be made better
How necessary is it that every person connected w ith the maintenance or
support of our public schools should be a man or woman thoroughly
equipped for the service and should give to it their best thought The
world today is seeking men and women who are honest ond upright It
will not make them honest to be educated It will not make them up-
right to be intellectual The training they receive must come from per-
sons thems Ives who know w hat honesty and uprightness means and who
will by precept as well as example instill this idea thoroughly into the
minds and hearts of their pupils
