FIGURES FOR TnE FARMER
CONSIDER
TO
ActunI Amount of Stute Taxes in This
County This Tear 1
This is a true story of state taxes
Every figure given Is a correct figure
No guesses to Included They back
up the contentions made by the re-
publicans thalt state taxes are confis-
catory burdensome and twice what
they were under republican rule in
old Oklahoma territorial days
The total assessed valuation of all
property In the State for 1909 Is $870-
0000000d! Tbe'htate levy Is 25 mills
which will realize for the aise of the
strl e government $217500000 The
total amount of taxes assessed In 1907
ths last year of territorial govern-
ment was $57935797 which was rais-
ed by a levy of 65 mills upon a val-
uation of$105337 81300 Property at
tnat time was listed for aboult 20 per
cent of its real value at the present
time It Is listed at about 80 per cent
so that while the levy In 1907 was
apparently higher a piece of property
actually worth $100000 at thst time
was taxed $110 at the present time It
la taxed $200
Alfalfa county not being in exist-
ence as a county In 1907 it Is impossi-
ble to sfate what the taxes would have
been then but ibis year's state taxes
amouctlng to nearly $50000 on a val-
uation of nearly $20000000 and the
property being listed in 1907 at about
20 per cent of Its real value and Is list-
ed now at about 80 per cent it Is easy
to figure that we are paying alt least
as much again for state taxes and this
allows liberally for the Improvements
and added values during the past two
years
The taxable property in Alfalfa
county is listed at $19969099 The
sta's levy being 25 we will therefore
pay in sitate taxes the sum of
$4992274 Where does the money go?
The entire taxes from two counties
valued as is this one will go to pay
the expenses of the special session of
the legislature which convened yes-
terday The spending of the taxes Is
on easy job the rub lies In getting the
people to put up without tqo much
kicking
School Election
Eighty-two voters of this school
district signed the petition calling an
election to vote bonds to the amount
of $13000 for the purpose of building
a school house The school Ixiard has
posted notices selling Tuesday Feb
1st as the date for vot log on the pro-
position' From I lie general expression of the
people fully ninety per cent of them
wll! vote for the bonds There are
approximately 200 voters In the dis-
trict and if all of them vole It wil
require 134 to carry the proposli Ion
and therefore 67 to defeat It
Progressive Jet Citizens Raise Suffi-
cient Funds to Guarantee Pur
chase of Buildings Prior to
‘ Reorganizing
That Jet will have her regular
Fair this fall is an assured fact-
Several citizens of the town and
surrounding community got together
last Friday night and put up suf-
ficient money to guarantee the pur-
chase of the buildings advertised for
sale at the meeting of the board
of directors of the Jet Pair Associa-
tion Saturday the bid of $700 was
accepted
The new organization has not
as yet been perfected and it is
therefore not definitely known as to
who the stockholders will be The
plan is to Incorporate for $1000 to
be divided into twenty shares of $50
each These shares are to be assess-
able thereby providing for the im-
mediate raising of funds in case any
Fair meeting should suffer a deficit
Every person who is awarded a cash
premium will receive his money with-
out any unnecessary delay
The date of the meeting this fall
and as to whether or not Jet will
remain a member of the Western
Fair Association and the American
Trotting Association has not as yet
been determined
The spirit that prompted these
enterprising citizens in saving thq
Fair to Jet is certainly commendable
and they should receive the united
support of everyone who thinks a
Fair Is an incentive towards rais-
ing better stock and agricultural
products and is a good thing in the
way of advertising -this the grandest
