R L Williams was bom on
December 20 1868 on a farm

to work for himself and prin-
cipally through his own efforts
he was educated He grew to
manhood in Alabama and all his
life lived in Alabama and the
Indian Territory except two
years when he lived in southern
Texas He was never a candi-
date for any public office in his
life until he ran for delegate to
the constitutional convention
from the 108th district At one
time he was elected city attorney
of the town of Durant Territory
being elected without applying
Aor the office
As a member of the consti-

Mr Williams drew or drafted
the entire fellow servant provis-

all of the railroad and public ser-
vice corporation provisions except
two and he put more provisions
in the constitution than any other
member In addition to the reg-
ular standing committees here-to-fore
mentioned he was a mem-
ber of the ‘Legal Advisory Com-
mittee” for the constitutional
convention The provision relat-
ing to the initiative and referen-
dum was prepared and reported
by the committee on legislative
department of which he was a
member He was absent from
but two roll calls during the
session of the convention
Mr Williams was author of the
resolution adopted by the De mo-
cratic Campaign Committee de-
claring it to be the policy to raise
the necessary campaign funds
from among the whole people in
small'amounts rather than from
the few in large amounts and
further making it a rule that
any Democrat could examine the
records of the campaign commit-
tee to see where these contribu-
tions came from Said resolutions
further instructed the committee
not to except contributions from
corporations and where these
contributions came from officers
of corporations not to accept
same if they came from the
treasury of the corporation
This provision having been offer-
ed before the Democratic Cam-
paign Committee for Oklahoma

homa City on July 31 1906 by
Hon Fred Parkinson said reso-
Intion being prepared and writ-
ten by himself and introduced
by Mr Parkinson at his request

won more litigated cases in the
Indian Territory than any other
lawyer for his years of experi-

with some of the most important
cases that have been in litigation
in the Indian Territory
Mr Williams has been active-
ly identified with the democra-
tic party ever since he reached
his majority he was a member
of the Indian Terrirory Democra-

Court He is fitted to ‘make an
ideal judge of the Oklahoma
Supreme Court and the demo-
crats of this district can make no
mistake in voting for Bob Williams
Not All One Way
The following editorial from
the Woods County Republican
shows that even away out there
not all republicans are in favor
of voting down statehood It
says:
“Many of the most influential
republican newspapers of both
Oklahoma and Indian Territory
favor the adoption of the consti-
tution The editor of this paper
is twitted with being a “mug-j

wump” and a democrat because
he doesn’t believe the republican
party can afford to fight the
adoption of the ‘constitution
thus taking the role of an oppo-
nent of statehood Our conten-

promising ’republican papers as
the Oklahoma Post Chickasha
Journal El Reno Republic the
Greer County Times and others
The Wichita Eagle and the Iowa

can papers of their respective
states commend many things in
the constitution So long as
papers of such influence and
reputation favor ratification the
Republican doesn’t fear those
who are charging it with being
a mugwump sheet”
