ENCKE'S COMET

Astral Visitor Flamed in Sky

WASHINGTON D. C.-Juti about
three and a third years ago a famout

great names identified with it. At
about that time the world wat electri
fied by the news of a world conflict.
Today (hat same comet it reappear-

Governments are telling the world
through their representative what their
aims and objects in the war are all
(or the benefit of the enemy countries
Enck Learned Orbit
The comet is Encke't. named after
the German tcientist Juhann I rani
Kncke.
Knckc's comet it tupposed to have
aiipeared among many other limes
about the time of Julius Caesar't death
(H. C. 44) and furnished Hallry with
the opportunity to prove that comets
revolve around the tun in conic tec-
lions and are controlled by the same
force that controlt planets. It is named
after F.nrke because this astronomer
determined its orbit. Hacklund later
discovered that Ita speed was slightly
accelerated at each revolution or that
there must be some resisting medium
in our tolar tyltem.
"Encke's comet" taid Trot. A. Hall
of the United States Naval dWrva-
tory. "will be nearest the sun on March
25 of this year. Ve will watch it with
great interest because of the theory
that it carrirs a resisting medium with
it as outlined hy F.ncke tiion its dis-
rovcry in 181 9 by Tons. Its last ap-
pearance was in September 1114
Many of the large observatories prob-
ably will photograph it. It is a famous
body.
Due Again la 1132.
"Kncke's comet" said Prof. Hall
"appears about every three and a half
years and since the original deter-
mination of its orhit hy Encke in 1810
it has appeared and been noted by as-
tronomers who followed Encke't cal-
ctslations. It is supposed to he the fa
mous comet of 1786. Encke't conjc
ture as to the orbit was that this comet
appeared in 1rtfi and Itu ami
that it would appear acain in 1822
His figures proved to he correct to
w itliin a few hours "
The comet cannot heveen with the
naked ee unless under exceptional
circumstances according to TVof. Hall
and was first seen on Dec. .10. of 1917.
