"lluir matij do you make Brer Rat
on a doily set made ol a line nrm
weave of linen. The work is done in
a combination of eyelet anil solid em-
broidery arranged to form a border
effect. The edges of the scallops are
finished with buttonhole embroidery
'Ihe edges may he worked flat it pre-
ferred but are much more durable and
beautiful when padded
'I here are three row of embroid-
ery above the scallops two nf eyelet
and one of solid satin dots the dots
bring worked between the rows of eye-
lets. The simple designs require smooth
even work and to insure this alter
drawing the thread from the ike in it
should be passed lightly between the
forefinger and the thumb to make lure
tahich wav the twist runs Now insert
the thread in the needle 10 that the
twist' seems to run downward This
gives great smoothness in the finished
work for if the opposite end is in-
serted in the needle the thread will be
drawn through the linen against its
twist thus causing ruitgbness and
knots .
The im.ill round eyelets are punched
with a sti'i'tlo then made bv whipping
mer and over running stilrhes lo bor-
der the hole to be surrounded These
running stitches should be small and
as even as possible
The satin dots are verv beautiful if
carefully embroidered I hey are about
the siie of a half dime and are well
padded before they are woiked. In
nuking satin stitch the thread should
be single. Doubling crosses the "lie"
cf the two threidi and prevents the
achievement of in even stitch. The
inexperienced worker should llways
hear in mind tbe fart that satin stitch-
es should be laid side hy side very
cb se together each stitch spanning tbe
entire width of tbe form to be em-
broidered. The stitches may be either
straight or slanting though some peo-
ple make 1 distinction calling the
straight stitchery French work and the
slanting satin ititrb. The work may
be done eitfler toward or away from
the embroiderer but the needle should
always be brought up on the left-hand
edge and inserted on the right-hand
one pains being taken to presecve
clear-cut margin.
A very pretty fid is to embroider
dining room linens in colors that are
congenial to the furnishings and dec-
oration of the room. For this teason
handsome doily sets are embroidered
In Wrdgewooa blue tin and green
The success of embroidery in color on
white depends very largely upon the
selection of the color. While the
basic red. blue or yellow will look
crude and harsh the dyers know how
to tone lliein and their combinations
10 that they are softened and become
very ugreraUe to the eye
The charm of the new Colored em-
broideries lies in their novelty and
they are in great demand although
there are housewives who cling tena-
ciously tn all-white effects and will not
bear of having them replaced even by
the most exquisite nf color schemes.
If preferred in working up the dol-
lies in question French knots may be
substituted for one of the rows of eye-
lets. There is only one item that hat
ever made the French knot difficult to
any worker and that is a lack of
knowledge as to the correct method of
making them. Correctly made tbry
are quickly and easily done; and an-
other virtue they will all look alike
since a stated number of twists around
the needle produces dots of uniform
