There was no immediate confirmation of the report from the governor's office but a spokesman at the McAlester General Hospital said, "We have many, many patients over here from there." There also were reports that at least one other guard had been injured. Shouting convicts armed with knives and meat cleavers wounded two guards, seized a dozen hostages and set fire to much of the industrial area Friday as Oklahoma's maximum security prison erupted into rioting. Deputy Warden Sam Johnston was among the hostages being held in the prison mess hall and there were reports from the inside the walls that more persons may have been wounded or injured when more inmates joined the original half dozen convicts who set off the violence. Smoke billowed from at least a dozen buildings in the prison industrail area and from outside the walls where hundreds of law enforcement officers surrounded the area it appeared the whole area was ablaze. A volley of shots was reported heard shortlu after the rioting broke out at mid-afternoon and it later was reported that at least one convict had been wounded by the shots. (photo tag: A blanket of black smoke rolls from buildings at the McAlester state penitentiary as fires erupted within the prison complext during rioting Friday.)"
