A Romance in Varnish,
TRY JAP-A-LAC.
Susie was a house m ud,
Susie was a blonde,
Susie had a lover
Of whom she was quite fond-
Hut he, like all true heroes
Of funds was very slack,
And thereby hangs a romance
A tale of Jap-a-lac.
Susie owned a table,
Susie owned a cha'r,
Susie owned a cupboard
All much the worse for wear.
Hut these things were not good
enough
To start a home a lac!
Until a brilliant idea came
A thought of Jap-a lac.
Susie donned her Kasterhat.
Susie donned her jacket.
.V;sie -vent to Panton's store
And there procured a packet.
A yellow brush was added
With bristles soft and black,
And home she went with a happy
heart
And a can of Jap-a-lac.
If you had seen that table.
If you had seen that chair.
If von had seen that cupboard
All new and shiny there.
You would have wished to be a
maid,
In apron white and cap,
Weaving a dream of home sweet
home,
From a can of Jap-a-lac.
Next came an old time picture.
Next came a rusty stove,
Next came a shabby sofa,
And Susie worked on those.
Hehold! A load of furniture,
Without a scratch or hack.
And thru she went to Panton's
For more nice Jap-a-lac.
There's a cottage in the suburbs
There's a pretty flower bed.
Do you hear the gay canary
In his cage all done in red?
If you care to share such happiness
Just turn your footsteps back,
Go to Panton's West End Phar-
macy
For a can of Jap-a-lac.
There is Jap-a-lac in cherry.
There is Jap-a-lac in green
At Pantons there's a tint in blue
The sweetest ever seen.
There is walnut for the woodwork
There is white, and ground and
black,
Dull or brilliant, as you fancy
Hurrah! for Jap-a-lac.

Some Ancient Coins
About fifteen years ago Judge Victor
Clay Barrlnger was living in Alexan-
dria, Egypt, when im extensive Are o<:-
curred. After this fire he bought from
a native a mass which appeared to
consist of corroded copper, which ha
was told had been obtained from \
hole in the wall where a building had
been demolished in the conflagration.
This compacted green cylindrical mass
of about twenty pounds weight was
kept as a hearth ornament, and not
examined until It recently .nine into
the possesion of Or. 1'aul It. Barrln-
ger, of the University of Virginia. The
mass then bore the imprint of tlia
| woven bag in which it had been con-
fined, and proved to be composed of
coins in various stages of corrosion.
The nuttyor was requested to clean
off a nummher of the coins, of which
there were probably 500, and so far as
j examined all prove to have belonged
to the ^ame composition and approxl-
i niately the Hame weight, about fifteen
giams each. The unaltered red metal
j consists of silver and copper, contain-
ing, hs shown by several samples, al-
| n °st exactly one part of silver to four
of copper, which, when partially al-
j tacked by dipping in acid, loses a por-
tion of copper,, and leaves a larger pro-
portion of s .ver on the surface, and
thereafter continues to "wear" is a I
white metal, evidently having passed
| aa "sliver coin."

Whence come the meteorites, or
aerulltes (alrstones), that occasionally
plug into our atmosphere with an in-
itial velocity fifty times greater than
that of a cannonball, and, after a blaz-
inii flight through the air, strike the
earVjJ Some of these are solid masses
of lr&h, mingled with a little nickel and
cobalt, weighing several tons.
About a dozen of these iron aerolites
have been seen to fall from the sky.
Many others have been found which
were not seen when they fell, but
whose nature Is determined by their
peculiar structure and composition.
Far larger in number than the iron
aerolites are those of a stony composi-
tion. Although between twenty and
thirty of the chemical elements have
been found in aerolites, no new ele-
ment, that Is to say, no element other-
wise unknown on the earth, has ever
been discovered in them, nut they do
occasionally contain certain minerals,
that is, combinations of chemical ele-
ments unlike any ever found in the
crust of the earth.
From what masked battery are thesa
Immense and strangely formed projec-
tiles hurled at the earth? No flash, no
puff or telltale smoke in surrounding
space, reveals the firing point. Only
by a study of the missiles themselves
and by a careful calculation of their
trajectories can we hope to ioar
whence they como.
