DISMISSED CADETS
The following editorial is from
the pen of the editor ol the Okla-
homa City Times and he has
situation of vvliieh lie writes si/. .1
up aboilt correct according to tlie
belief ol most American citizens:
"The expulsion of seven ca<l< is
from the military ncndein.v at
West Point i<"- hazing seems to l «
a further emphatic expression
the determination ol tIt• • authori
ties to stamp out tliis practice
What gives added sij^nificancc
to the action is that tin oil* 11s«•
was mild, a slia/inir practices «.ro
It was without the elements ot hu
miliation or torture simply an
attempt t« frighten a cadet with
the appearnnce of a trhost and
heating him with tent p' «rs when
he refused to be scared and turn
ed oil the alleged «rhost with his
fists.
A peculiar, though apparently
wholly incidental, inleresj Is
given to the case by the fact that
the victim of this hazinv was Ca-
det Sutton, a brother of Lieuten-
ant Sutton, whose death, follow-
ing a ipiarrel with fellow officers
at the marine school was recently
investigated by a naval hoard of
inquiry.
The seven dismissed cadets he
fore leaving the academy joined
in a statement which makes the
treatment of Sutton a rather trif-
ling affair, a friendly tussle in
which Suttop was hurt and in
which the intent to haze was en-
tirely absent.
Hut we are freely inclined in
this instance to take the judg-
ment and finding of tin- board of
investigation, whose report was
twice returned from Washington
to West Point for further elueida
tion as to specific details. It and
the statement of the cadets do not
essentially differ except in the in
terprctation of the nature of tin
assault. For many years then
was error on the side of indul
genee of the practice of ha/iug,
and even if now there be some cr
ror on the side of severity it max
be pardoned.
Hazing has some friends ;iinoii<
the upper class men at tin mill
tary academy and anion • armv
officers, and is ne yet wholly re
probate-, in all the collet cs o( lie
land, but it is not condoned anv
where else, (ienerally the expul
sion of the seven cadets from
West Point will lie cons del I
good example and testimony to
the sincerity of the announced
policy of exterminating it
