Here's a classy political argnbent
from our self-esteemed contemporary,
the Daily Democrat:
•TThe organ < r any-old-thlng-ao-
lonR-as-the-owner-is benefitted, takes
an occasional rap at the city adminis-
tration. As it has but few readers
and less influence it is hardly worth
while to give it attention, but when
it maliciously and w.lfully distorts
facts the few readers it has niig'lu 'be-
lieve some o .' Its statements. The as-
sertion that the city has used (in
of the $_r ,000 voted for sewers is
about, as near correct as the -plocn
writer of that organ ■ sually adheres
to the truth. The Democrat in a >w
days will give a detailed statement of
the sewer question, and show thai t lie
sewer fund used is far below the
figures named."
We won d not "be o unkind as to
suggest that the Democrat still
"stands courageousl> behind the <• t>
council" (so long a- the owners of
the Democrat are benefitted >. And
besides, that has nothing to do with
the case. What we are anxious about
is that detailed statement, in which
it will be attempted to prove that
$23,000 of the sewer fund has not
been spent..
By all means let's have that state-
ment before the city election; for
the administration is in a feeble and
tottering condition.

S. A. Powley called at The Ameri-
can office this morning inquiring for
rooms or a house to rent. He stated
that lie and Mrs. Powley had walked
all over the city in search of vacant
rooms or houses, and that so fat |
they had been unaible to find a place
to move into. Mr. Powley comes j
here from Guthrie, having resigned
a position with tne Santa Fe to ac-
cept employment as yard conductor
for the Hock Island at this point.
Yesterday afternoon the wife of
another railroad employe called at
The American office and related a
similar experience.
These are not unusual occurrences;
in Tact, there is rarely ever a day
filial from one to a dozen similar en-
quiries are not made at The Ameri-
can office, and we are Informed that
the same is true at the office i the
other daily newspaper.
This is a most serious condition of
affairs—one that demands an early
solution. There are many different
views entertained us to why more
homes are not being built in HI Reno,
and It is high time that the truth is
gotten at. in order that the city shall
not be allowed to suffer longor for
the lack of homes for rent.
One theory is that the price of va-
cant lots has jumped so nigh that no
conservative investor will pit any
money into rental property in this
city; on the other hand, owners of
vacant property declare that in no
alty in Oklahoma is real estate priced
so reasonably as in El Reno.
Another says that rents niuet be
raised, and then raised again and
again, before any great amount of
building can be looked for; and rent-
ers are practically unanimous in the
belief that rents for both business
and residence properties are so high
as to be almost prohibitive.
We shall not undertake to say
who is right the owners of vacant
property, prospective purchasers,
landlords or tenants, and none of
t'heni would agree with us if we un-
dertook to say who is wrong. Hut
there is one thing upon which we are
practically all agreed: FJ Reno must
have several hundred new homes AT
OXCK The Commercial Club has
been making some efforts to Induce
outside capital to interest itself in
rental property here. Real estate
dealers may be doing the same, but
of t'hls we cannot say. It Is a very
rnusual occurrence for a piece of
property t<> be advertised for s:ile
through the newspapers here; w here-
as, the newspapers of other Oklahoma
towns are filled with real estate ads.
Perhaps there is nothing on the
market here. Kl Re o tea ■■ ta e is
