AIR LAME PATROLS
Britain Already Looking Into the
Future.
Necessity of Having Force to Guard
Country's Merchant Ships In the
Clouds Against Sudden Attack
la Pointed Out.
The Dutch paper Telegrnnf report-
ed that on November 15 airplanes
dropped bombs on the -castle at Swal-
men, where the ex-crown prince of
Germany is staying.
No suggestion Is made as tn the
nationality of the airplanes, except by
the parenthetical remark that Swal-
men Is only three miles from the Ger-
man frontier. The report does not
mention any casualties, nor does It
sny how the ex-prince bore himself
under tire, though It would have been
Interesting to have known, since, ac-
cording to popular report, he has had
no previous experience during the war
of being under Are, having left all
that to the German "cannon fodder,"
which he so recklessly and cynlcnlly
sacrificed.
The report Is vague In the extreme,
hut whether or not true. It suggests
various exciting possibilities In the
future. Piracy and smuggling by air-
plane are possibilities not to be over-
looked. Of course, while all Europe
la still armed, and the German army
resembles a pack of wolves without a
pack leader, nothing could be easier
than for some German airmen who
disapprove of the ex-crown prince's
conduct In general and are resolved
that no counter-revolution shall ever
make him emperor, to paint out the
national mnrks on their machines, fly
high above the clouds into Holland,
dive upon his residence and release
their bombs. In any force still retain-
ing Its discipline and the discipline of
active service at that, such action
would be wildly impossible.
In times ofjwace such raids would
be less easy. All airdromes and their
airplanes will of course be registered;
the movements of aircraft will be even
more strictly under observation than
those of seagoing ships, for the simple
reason that their periods of nbsence
from terra flrma are necessurlly much
briefer.
Moreover, air pirates could never
stop a commercial airplane and call
on It to "stand and deliver." They
could never get away with booty, and
therefore their operations could only
be destructive and not profitable.
But one must not overlook the pos-
sibility that a power as evil disposed
and reckless as Germany was In 1914
might suddenly begin a systematic at-
tack on all the aircraft of a rlvnl. The
experiences of the past warn us to be
cautious In the future.
It will be the task of the royal air
force to guard the air merchantmen
of Britain. For years their work may
be as bloodless as was the work of
the navy from Navarlno to 1914. but
the navy was needed at last, and It
would be very rash to declare that the
royal air force will never again send
a foe down In flames.
We must remain prepared on land,
on the sea and, lost but not least, In
the air.—London Mall.
HEALTH FADS SEEM FOOLISH
After All, Their Devotees as a Rule
Lie Down and "Die Like
Anybody Else."
Twenty yenrs ago I knew a man
culled Jlgglns, who had the health
habit, observes Stephen Leacock In
the Dallas News.
lie used to take a cold plunge every
morning. He said It opened his pores.
After this he took a hot sponge. He
said It closed the iMires. He got so
thnt he could open and shut his pores
at will.
Jlgglns used to stand nnd breathe
at an open window for half an hour
before dressing. He said It expanded
his lungs. He might of course have
had It done In a slim; shop with a
boot stretcher, hut, after all, It eost
him nothing this way. And what Is
half an hour?
After he bad got his vest on Jlg-
glns used to hitch himself up like a
dog tn harness and do shadow exer-
cises. He did them forward, back-
ward nnd hlndsldc up.
He could have got a Job as n dog
anywhere. He spent all his time at
this kind of thing. In his spare time
nt the office he used to lie on his atom
ncli on the floor nnd see if he could
lift hitsKlf up with iiis knacklea. if
he could then he tried some other way
until he found one that he couldn't
do. Then he would spend the rest of
his lunch hour on his stomach, per-
fectly happy.
In the evenings In his rootn he used
to lift Iron bins, (UhoB balls, lieuvy
dumb bells and haul himself up to the
celling with his teeth.
He liked it.
He spent half the night slinging
himself around the room. He said It
made his brain clear. When he got
his brain perfectly clear he went to
bed and slept. As soon as he woke
he began clearing It again.
Jlgglns Is dead. He was, of course,
a pioneer; but the fact that he dumb
belled himself to death at an early
age does not prevent a whole genera-
tion of young meu from following In
his path.
They are ridden by the health mn
nla.
They make themselves a nuisance.
They get up at Impossible hours.
They go out In silly little suits nnd
run marathon heats before breakfast.
They chase around barefoot to get the
dew on their feet. They hunt for
ozone. They bother about pepsin.
They won't eat meat hecnuse it has
too much nitrogen. They won t eat
fruit because It hasn't any. They pre-
fer albumen and starch to huckleberry
pie nnd doughnuts. They won't drink
water out of a tap. They won't eat
sardines out of a tin. They won't use
oysters, out of n pall. They won t
drink milk out of n glass. They are
afraid. Yes, sir, afraid. Cowards!
And after all their fuss they pres-
ently Incur some simple, old-fashioned
Illness, and die like anybody else.

The Minister's Fee.
A minister was called upon to marry
_ couple, nnd after the ceremony was
performed the bridegroom handed him
a pair of kid gloves. He thought this
n strange fee for a wedding ceremony,
and said so when he reached home and
told his wife to lay them away. '
A long time afterwards he needed a
new pnlr of gloves and asked his wife
for the pair the young man had given
him.
When he tried to put them on he
found he could not, and upon examina-
tion found that each tluger contained a
neatly folded $5 bill.

Olmstead St, Winona, Minn.
How often do we hear the expression
among women, "1 am so nervous, I enn-
not sleep," or "it seems as though I
should fly." Such women should profit
by Mrs. Sultze's experience and give
this famous root and herb remedy,
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com-
pound, a trial.
For forty years it has been overcom-
ing such Berious conditions as displace-
ments, inflammation, ulceration, irreg-
ularities, penodic pains, backache, dis-
tineas, and nervous prostration of
women, and is now considered the stan-
dard remedy for such ailments.

The hole was found, nnd the
