Okemah, May 24.—Fire broke out
in the Barry Brothers' gin here
about noon Saturday and entirely
destroyed the building. The loss is
estimated to be about with
oniv $lu.000 insurance. The company
will probably rebuild the gin this
summer for the tall business.
The fire is supposed to have been
caused by a match in a load of cot-
tot}, which was beiug ginn°d. as the
fire was flr.it noticed iu t!'«? oot'on
house. At the time It was discovered,
the fite could have been easily extin-
guished with the apparatus in the
buiiding, there being two hose con-
nections in the building. Wlion the
men employed in the gin had got the
hose ready foi* servich the water
plugs were opened, but for soirc rta-
ton there was no water in the pipes
and by the time tlw fire truck reach-
ed the scene there was no chance
of saving any part of. the pitiit and
It was totally destroyed.
The Barry Brothers' gin 'lad been
running as the farmers an still '•ring-
ing In cotton. There were about 20
bales of cotton in the building, all
of which was destroyed. The ice
plant, which belongs to tho sants com
pany. and the Okemah gin were en-
dangered by the fire, but were sav-
ed by hard work on the part of the
1 firemen. N. W. and J. R. Barry are
I the owners of the gin.

(the first step toward naval disarm

A vote was scheduled in the sen-
ate on Senator Borah's proposal cm-
I powering President Harding to in-
I vite Great Britain and lapan to con-
] fer with this government on a five
lyaar program of naval building re-
ductions.
Indications were that the senate
would adopt the measure and that
favorable action would later be tak-
en by the house of represoutatives.
Capt. Khedu Crawford of the Sal-
vation Army Is the angel who has been
making theater goers glad to dig deep
into their pockets to provide the Sal-
vation Army with money to carry on
Its work among the unfortunate ev-
erywhere.
