People in the United States have been endowed with a vast heritage of scenic, historic, man-made,
hsted beiow. If all those deemed worthy were Included in the present list, the selection would have been
expanded a hundredfold.
Among our natural and man-made resources are enormous potentials for our enrichment and enjoyment.
We are fortunate that forward-looking citizens have set aside many of the awe-inspiring points of interest so
that this wealth has been preserved for all to enjoy. The efforts of these citizens may be seen through the
many federal, state, and local government agencies and private organizations whose prime objective is the
conservation of our natural and historic heritage. The National Park Service, which has jurisdiction over the
national parks, national monuments, and other national areas, many of which are listed here, is one of these
agencies. Some places mentioned are so broad in interest and activity they might well be classed in another
or any combination of the categories. The final choice has been based upon the most significant character-
