Uiusband. Mr. Brown.
Mrs. Johns, tastefully gowned,
wept Into the room and began:
"This is the first time I have eon-
sen, ed to speak on this most embar-
rassing subject. Now, I want to be
most emphatic In denying every
charge that has been made against
me."
Mrs. Johns' cheeks went crimson
while she spoke and her eyes snap-
lied fire. She continued:
■ They have taken the depositions
of servants against me, basing their
.decimations on frail evidence—t|he
ordinary incidents of a private life,
'these incidents are distorted and
•nagnifled into scandalous and vulgar
matter."
Stared at in Streets.
A reference was made to Lewis
(Brown, her first husband, and his
ehargo against his former wire and
i.Mr. Hoe. She said.
"As to Lewis Brown's evidence, I
4an only repeat that a man who ad-
mits that his wife supported him and
•who sold himself once certainly
►would testify against this wife a sec-
ond time. It would seem that per-
'sonal enmity was the real cause of
this perecution."
Mis. Johns then told how she was
'.he center of all eye^s when she ap-
peared on the streets.
"Men in the employ of newspapers
run after me for Interviews," she
said. I never leave my nouse that
'I am not met by photographers.
Wherever I go 1 am met by a curious
mob. My very life bs made unbear-
able through the notoriety Into which
l have bee,, thrust, and it has been
no fault of my own.
if young Robert Hoe's object he
only to protect his father's estate
from an unscrupulous woman, why
all tills publicity? 'this entire suit
could have been fought with sealed
papers. There absolutely was no ne-
cessity for all this notoriety.
Fights for Hoe's Memory.
The thought that Mr. Hoe's mem-
ory is being sullied is causing me
more, or at least as much, suffer-
ing as the false position in which I
have been placed."
Again Mrs. Johns was silent. She
brushed hack her hair first from the
left temple and then fron. the right
and drew her lvanilkerc .ef across
her lips. She clenched her teeth as
she added:
"I wish to state most emphatically
that I knew absolutely nothing qj
Mr. Hoe's intentions until t'he papers
had been drawn.
"Mr. Hoe asked me to accompany
him to the office of Mr. Hapgood. his
solicitor, to sign some papers, it
was not until lie presented me with
them that I fully realized Mr. Hoe's
affection and gratitude towards me.
It was after Mr. Hoe's death that
his son, Robert Hoe, Jr., accompani-
ed by Arthur Curtlss James and a
solicitor went to Mr Hapgood's of-
fice in London and saw the original
document."
Mrs. Johns was close to teans when
she told of an alleged attempt to
humiliate her by mak.ng accusations
against her. She said:
"The nature o those accusations
Is so revolting they would cause any
gentlewoman against whom they are
made intense suffering. Efforts have
been made to force me into a com-
promise in my suit against t.ie estate
of Mr. Hoe. I will not compromise.
•'1 have been offered $25,000 to set-
tle my claim for face value, but 1
will not accept it,"
