which begets estrangement of
many of its warmest friends, but
the fact remains that it finds no
more pleasure in these tilings than
the average individual and could
not be induced to do the same but
for the feeling that a duty to the
public rests upon it which must
be discharged at all hazzarsds.
Is it not strange, therefore, that
the newspaper, like the individual,
is generally glad to witness the
close of a campaign. They are
marked by too much bit! jrness, too
many sacrifices, too few compen-
sating results to make them either
advantageous from a financial
standpoint or agreeable from the
standpoint of individual comity.

NEWSPAPERS AND CAMPAIGNS.
Paradoxical as it m y seem to the
layman who often labors under
the misaprehension that enga^in?
in political waifare afforus a
source of continuous delight, the
newspaper is generally first to
welciim e the closing of a campaign.
On its shoulders invariable falls
the brunt of the battle, and rests
the responsibility in large meas-
ure, if other conditions are equal,
for the success or the defeat of
the ticket.
In most respects the newspaper
is not unlike the average indi-
vidual. Its tastes, predilections
and passions are generally human.
The hurly-burly and hurrah of the i T
campaign are as distasteful to it I
as to any one else, even though it
puts on a bold front and smiles j
serenely.
Some people, of course, cannot j i 179 compapy dl iU"
