this measure, while the people
are thinking of the glory of the
war, of patriotism and the flag.
True the diselosures of corruption
ind incompetency in the manage-
ment of the war have shaken the
faith of the bosses in this proposi-
tion. but it nevertheless -hows
that the republicans do not ex-
pect to carry the election on the
merits of the McKinlev adminis-
tration in relation to any promises
made in lS'.bi, but relv as usual on
fooling the people. Furthermore
this bill is not to become a law
while the people are thinking
about the measure, but while they
are thinking about the glory of
the war and the American flag.
They hope to accomplish the re-
sult by methods similar to those
by which silver was demonetized
in 187:5. If the bill possessed
merit and will better the eondi-
hoina this year, was unaware of

It might be well to have stated
also that when his Nibs, the gov-

from Perry and Noble county, for
his annual report, he never
failed to send a long letter to the

to railroad it through congress,
while the people are not thinking
of the measure. This bill propos- j
es to keep the gold standard, to
stop all coinage of silver dollars,
and make silver a mere token
money by making it redeemable
in gold. It also proposes to de-
stroy all the greenbacks and
treasury notes and enlarge and
perpetuate the power of the nat-
ional banks by turning over to
them the entire control of the
money of the country, and allow-
ing tlieiu to issue bank currency
based on their assets. Thus the
banks can make money -can e or
plenty as best -uit- their own
selfish interests. No wonder the
republican party -brinks from a
discus-ion of this measure before
the people. This policy brands
the leader- a- coward-, and the
fact that they propose to enact a
law they seek to keep from the
people brands them as traitor- to
the republic and enemies to the
common people.
