CAME,
The letter that never came was
not a circumstance to the land-
slide that never catno. The re-
ports that poured into the city
from <! to o'clock Tuesday even-
ing described the greatest landslide
in history. Missouri was doubt-
ful and about to bo surrendered
by the Democrats. Tennessee was
conceded to McKinley, and Texas
was certain to go for him. AH
that was deft to Bryan was Col-
orado and Southern Florida. It
was an overwhelming victory—on
paper.
i'lic haste and absurdity of these
dins were suspicious. Rumors
that the earth was shaking began
to fly >ahout<soon after noon, and
by the time the count of the bal-
lots began the complete annihila-
tion of the Democracy (by bul-
letin) was accomplished. For
some hours the brazen and un-
founded reports continued to pass
current, but then the result was
recognized as very doubtful.
It is impossible to suppose the
early reports are due to a mistake.
They were deliberately prepared
for some purpose or other.
The correct explanation of these
reports can not yet be. determined,
but they may be accounted for in
several nvavs. They may have
