checks to eliminate them. The trees
should be thoroughly sprayed as soon

Government in Libel Suit
Washington. The final attempt of |
the federal government to uphold the
validity of the indictment in the New
York federal courts of the Press Pub-
lishing company in a charge of libel,
growing out of the publication of an
article in the New York World on
the purchase of the Panama canal,
was made Monday in oral arguments
before the supreme court of the Unit-
id States. The government's efforts
were opposed by arguments for the
Press Publishing company, designed
to sustain the action of the lower fed-
eral court in quashing the Indictment,
was not damaged.
To Investigate Oklahoma Prison
Cuthrie, Okla.—To investigate
charges against the Texas Huilding
company in constructing the state
penitentiary, the state board of af-
fairs, composed of Royal .J. Allen,
chairman; J. J. Quarles, secretary,
and J. T. Dickerson, third member,
will meet at McAlester Nov. 3. The
charges were preferred by W. L.
Kishop, formerly foreman of the steel
gang working on the penitentiary
walls.

possible one to solve, while merely
covering everv leaf on one side or the
other Is a comparatively simple mat-
ter. Dr. \j. (). Howard obtained from
Montpellier a shipment of a minute
! parasitic wasp, Tetrastichus xantho-
i melaenae, which seems to be very
j effective in keeping down this shade-
tree pest In the vicinity of Paris and
j other portions of France. The habits
of this little wasp attacks and devel
j ops in the eggs of the beetle and Dr.

Land Sales Dates Announced
Muskogee, Okla.—The government
lias made public its regulations under
which the 2,000,000 acres of unallotted .
lands in the Five Civilized Tildes will
be sold, as well as fixed the uales
and places when the sales will be ]
conducted. The first sale will be in '
the Seminole nation, at Wewoka,
Nov. 21. Following that date sales
will be made in every county in east- j
ern Oklahoma where there is land

Maryland Suffrage Laws Hit Hard
Baltimore, Md.—Judge Morris, in
the United States district court, ren-
dered a decision Friday holding that
the registrars of voters at Annapolis
are personally liable for damages, if
j any, for having refused to register
negroes, such refusal being based on
a law purely local in its application,
' and which contains a so-called "grand-
father clause." It is understood that
the case will be taken to the supreme
court of the United States.
Canal Gates Are Wonders
Pittsburg, Pa. -The largest gates in
tne world are being made In Pittsburg
for the Panama canal. Any one of
the ninety two of them, for there are
to be forty-six pairs in all, will be
about as high as a six-story building,
sixty-five feet wide and seven feet
thick. The structural steel that will
go to make litem will weigh t;0,0oi)
tons, or more than eight times as.
