Had it not been for the prompt ac-
tion of Tom Ball, Merl Mudgett, ag-
ed four, would have probably been
drowned in the stream that runs
through the Government park last
Monday. The little fellow was play-
ing about and he stepped out in the
water that was deeper than lie antici-
pated and sank over his head. Mr.
Ball seeing this at once jumped in
and rescued him, probably saving his
life, as the bny was in charge of his
sister and there were no other oer-
sons near who could have rendered
a'iy assistance.

leaving cavey mailer the drill passed
into a close, line quick sand except
that It does not cave. It is most diffi-
cult to mix with waterand the slush
is about as difficult to mix wit h water i
as oil. Tills remarkable formation]
requires ihe energy of 500 blows with
tools weighing 240;) pounds to average
one inch In depth. Adamantine, the
hardest granite, or trenton rock will
give way faster, but a change is slowly
taking place that makes more rapid
drilling possible and by the time we
go to press the conditions may tie
greatly improved. We will soon be
below the 17 foot sand and It 0 feet.
In thirty or forty feet we expect to
encounter another sand of the Pen-
nsylvania series. The lirst of these,
this far north is not open but the
second or third sand promises better
results. If we have passed below
cavey matter our advice is tocontinue
tiie work until w- have penetrate')

We wish to impress the fact as for
cibly as we can, upon the minds of
the farmers of this county, that it is
no longer necessary for them to hire
any company to make them farm
loans.
There Is one company, with plenty
of cash on hands at all times, ready
and anxious, to make all good loans
offered, atone straight, low rate of
interest, without any commission
whatever. Just one note, and one
mortgage, and tne money will be paid
on tlie day the papers are signed.
