his friends no one was there to meet

at the time mentioned by the pilot
she was exactly in the direction and
position indicated by him, but about
two hundred miles off. To prove
that there is no hallucination i:i
statements like these, evidence!
would be required as conclusive as
that needed to establish the reality
of the great sea serpent.
Sometimes, however, objects are
not only elevated, but inverted. This
appearance is very common in polar
seas, the inversion being due to the
rays from the lower part of the dis-
tant object being more bent than
those from the upper part. Sailors
see it best from a lofty position, such
as the masthead. A well-known
case occurred olf the coast of Green-
land in 1.S22, when C".pt. Seorcsby
was made aware of the nearness of
his father's ship by recognizing its
inverted image in the sky. And in
1851 the whole English fleet of nine-
teen sail was seen as if suspended in
the air upside d uvn by those on
board H. M. S. Archer, cruising
fifty miles away off Ojs.-I, ill the Hal-
tie. It is not unusual to see two or
three different horiMns w'tli images
of a distant vessel alternately in-
verted and upright.
Cold, heavy air ov >r water is just
as it were in the op;- >site condition
from warm, light over a sandy
desert; hence, ill th • latter ease, the
rays are bent in t'.i > opposite direc-
tion, and seem to com" from r.n ob-
ject below the real !":• . So that in
the mirag.iof thodesert the observer
sees the distant object directly
through the uniform part of th? r>ir
