THE HASKELL TALK
Anil it is Realized
Express Opinion on the Kute
mini Prison Report.
Gov. Haskell: "It seems to me
that I would have heard something
of this cruelty to prisoners if it ex-
isted. Since I have been in office
] have not received a single com-!
plaint from a prisoner. Over fifty : terribly surprised
of those I have pardoned have come'
to me to express their gratitude aud
none of them have said anything
about cruel treatment. On the con-
trary, they have mentioned the
kindness they have received."
Warden Haskell: "No person is
allowed to be punished without a
writen report of such punishment be-
ing made to me. The deputy warden
is the disciplinarian, but, all disci-
pline comes under my control. The
story about the water holes is ab-
surd, in fact the whole story is so
false and absurd as to be hardly
worthy of refutation. It is ot such
a nature, however, that I want an
investigation."
Miss Kate Barnard In her report
says: "The Lansing, Kansas, prison
is a hell. She talked with hundreds
of released prisoners and they all told
the same story of cruelty. Then she
made an investigation of the prison
Lahoma Sun: "In our humble
opinion the peui ie of this town are
shirking a plain duty in not pro-
viding some amusement for the
young peopl >. We go for months
at a time without a social gathering
of any kind—not even a prayer
meeting and stiil some parentB are
and shocked to
hear that their boys go to the pool
room or that the girls go to a dance.
What do you expect? Do you think
the young people are going to be
satisfied to stay at home and read

The ''stunt," the report says, is
the term the miners use in describing
their daily tasks in the mines. Each
man, whether big or little must get
out three car loads of coal per day.
That is the rigid rules of the mine,
experience and strength making no
difference. Miss Barnard says the
boy tearfully told her that he did
the best he could but that he could
dig but a little more than two cars

Another mode of punishment men-
