THK PKIM'KSS ILLONA
Miguel finally emerged from the
new mother's tent played a bit with
the nigged children and still smiling
at them as he left he made for one
of the larger tents with a more seri-
ous look In his eye.
"Gemma. Gemma" ha called and
again "Gemma."
"One minute Don Miguel" answer-
ed a voice. "I dress."
Soon a woman emerged from the
tent and greeted Miguel with an Inso-
lent nod of her black head and a
laugh. Hands on huge hips she stood
waiting t.) hear what he had to say.
"Where Is the girl?" Inquired Mi-
guel. "Where Is the Princess Illona?"
"Ah she. She gone half m an hour
ago. I cannot stop her at all. Sh
go off that way." Gemma pointed In
Hie direction of a small wood about
a quarter of a mile or so behind tho
clearing. "Ilhna very restless this
day." she continued. "Not speak at
all cry twice und tell .us to mind our
own business when wo asked her to
help push the caravan once. Not move
all day from the seat Illona. Lazy
girl very lazy. Don Miguel shall
please speak to her and tell her she
Is only like one of us. Must also work
for her keep and not dress all the
time."
"Now now Gemma stop scolding.
Illona works as hard as any of the
rest of you as a rule. But you know-
that she hates to be driven and you
women seem to take special delight
in driving her yet you never heckle
the other girls at all. What's the
matter with you und Stella and all
of them? Is It because Illona is a dif-
ferent color and likes to be by her-
self more than the rest of you do?
shame on you nil for being nasty to
a young girl. I won't have It d'you
hear? Everyone but you three or four
older women and that daughter of
yours loves Illona There' no reason
for you hating her nor annoying her
.it all."
"My daughter Stella he is true
gypsy (girl. She love all true gypsies
not make believe ones. She always
quarrel with fine lady Illona reason
that fine lady Illona not speak to my
Stella. Girl Stella real gypsy Stella
beautiful girl so dark and fiery like
all the gypsy girls. Like Marya Don
Miguel's own mother" said the wo-
man Insinuatingly and smiling up In-
to Miguel's eyes. "Ah Marya I knew
her so Veil. She was wonderful wo-
man. Only such women make good
wives for gypsy chiefs Don Miguel."
Then with a chuckle she stood sway
ing before him silent yet with her
whole body expressing some subtle
svggestion.
No doubt Miguel caught her veiled
meaning after again warning her to
see to it that the rest of the clique
let Illona alone he turned on his
heel and went off in the direction of
the woods.
The hush of twilight was upen
everything and as he walked along.
Don Miguel lifted his heud and sniffed
greedily of the soft balmy air and
looked contentedly around at the
peaceful landscape.
A w hlp-po' r-will called untiringly
from a nearby thicket and m hum-
: ming bivs droned lazily' by. The odor
i of clover rose to his nostrils sense-
I stirring and fraught with memories
I of these self-same mountains and his
j rumbles in them. Something deep down
j within him stirred to life suddenly us
ho walked. A seraething that caused
him to smile first and then frown
angrily.
Wheft he got to the edge of the
woods he stopped and called "Lona"
twice. Then reoelvlng no- answer he
went on walking again.
Looking sharply to right and left
of him as he walked so as not to
miss tho girl if she were anywhere
about he finally came to tho other
sldo of the woods and stopped at the
round of a voice crooning softly some-
where beyond.
Well hidden behind a tree trunk
Don Miguel stood still and craned his
neck to see who was singing and
where.
