Washington, June 8.—The army to
day took steps to share with the uavy :
in the American demonstration in |
Cuba.
Early In the day the general staff
gave a preliminary test to the machine :
it has constructed, when it issued or- |
ders to the quartermaster general to |
put in readiness for Cuban service the
four big army transports at Newport
News, and at the same time notified
the proper military officers at the va j
rious army posts where are located I
the organizations which go to make
up the "expeditionary force" to have
the men ready to entrain at a mo-
ment's notice. Within six hours, word
came from Quartermaster Ueneral
Aleshire that the big transports had
been put in commission with full sup-
plies and coal and augmented crews
and were ready to sail the moment
troops were placed aboard.
The order for the transports to sail
or for the troops to entrain was not
given and it was said at the state de-
partment that word would not be given
until the marine forces already landed
and now being distributed among the
threatened plantations in eastern Cuba
proved insufficient to afford the nec-
essary protection or that conditions on
the island on the whole had assumed
such a phase as to demand political
intervention.
Intervention, if determined upon,
must follow in regular way If the
gavernment of the United States de-
cides to follow the injunction laid by
the judge advocate general of the
army.
Warnings have to be conveyed to
the titular government of Cuba and
every effort must be made to induce
it to exhaust Its own resources In re-
storing order, and finally a proclama,
tion must be made of the conditions
which in the mind of the president of
the United States demand interven-
tion.
There have been frequent admoni-
tions, and yesterday the following sig-
nificant telegram was sent to the
American legation in Havana for pre
sentation to the Cuban government:
Under the exigencies of the sltua-
Barf a.

night you proposed to me I hung my

THE SAFE LAXATIVE
FOR ELDERLY PEOPLE
Most elderly people are more or
less troubled with a chronic, per*
•istent constipation, due largely to
lack of sufficient exercise. They ex-
perience difficulty in digesting even
light food, with a consequent belching
of stomach gases, drowsluess after
eating, headache and a feeling of lassi-
tude and general discomfort.
Doctors advise against cathartics and
violent purgatives of every kind, rec-
ommending a mild, gentle laxative
tonic, like Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin,
to effect relief without disturbing the
•ntire system.
Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin is the
nerfect laxative, easy In action, oer-

the taste. It possesses tonic proper-

Physicians Recommend Castoria
CAST0HIA has met with pronounced favor on the part of physicians,' pharma-
ceutical societies and medical authorities. It is used by physicians with
results most gratifying. The extended use of Castoria is unquestionably tho
result of three facts: #&•*—'Tho indisputable evidence that it is harmless:
Secofl</—That it not only allays stomach pains and quiets the nerves, but assimi-
lates the food: nw-It is an agreeablo and perfect substitute for Castor OiL
It is absolutely safe. It does not contain any Opium, Morphine, or other narcotio
and does not stupefy. It i3 unlike Soothing Syrups, Bateman's Drops, Godfrey's
Cordial, eto. This is a good deal for a Medical Journal to say. Our duty, how-
ever, is to expose danger and record the means of advancing health. The day
for poisoning innocent children through greed or ignorance ought to end. To
our knowledge, Castoria is a remedy which produces composure and health, by
regulating the system—not by stupefying it—and our readers are entitled to
the information.—Hall's Journal of Health.

Dr. B. Halstead Scott, of Chicago. Ilia, Bays: "I have prescribed ron*
Castoria often for Infanta during my practice, and find it very satisfactory."
Dr. William Belmont, of Cleveland. Ohio, says: "Your Castoria stand*
first in its class. In my thirty years of practice I can say I never havo
found anything that so filled the place."
Dr. J. H. Taft, of Brooklyn, N. Y.. says: "I have used your Castoria and
found it an excellent remedy in my household and private practice for
many years. The formula is excellent"
Dr. R. J. Hamlen. of Detroit, Mich., says: "I prescribe your Castoria
extensively, as I have never found anything to equal it for children ■
troubles. I am aware that there are imitations in the field, but I alwayi
see that my patients get Fletcher's."
Dr.Wm. J McCrann, of Omaha, Neb., aays: "As the father of thirteen
children I certainly know something about your great medicine, and aside
from my own family experience I have in my years of practice found Cav
toria a popular and efficient remedy in almost every home."
Dr. J. R. Clausen, of Philadelphia, Ta., aays: "The name that your Ca
torla has made for Itself in the tens of thousands of homea blessed by tha
presence of children, scarcely nceda to be supplemented by the endorse-
ment of the medical profession, but I, for one. r^ost heartily endorse it and
believe It an excellent remedy."
Dr. R. M. "Ward, of Kansas City, Mo., says: 'Thyslclans generally do not
prescribe proprietary preparations, but in the case of Castoria my expert*
ence, like that of many other physicians, has taught me to make an ex-
ception. I prescribe your Castoria in my practice because I have found it
to be a thoroughly reliable remedy for children's complaints. Any physi-
cian who has raised a family, as I have, will Join me In heartiest recom-
