Sweet Pea Not Royal Choice.
In vain did gardeners and horticul-
turists in England try to push the
elainiB of the sweet pea as a corona-
tion flower. Queen Mary has decided
that the pink carnation is the blossom
she wl]l carry.
The Windsor, which Ib a deep pink,
is the carnation she particularly faT-
ors, but the Lawson, a cerise carna-
tion: the Enchantress, which is pale
pink, and the Mrs. Joliffe, which is sal-
mon pink, will also be fashionable du-
ring the season. The Worshipful Com-
pany of Oardenera have begged to be
allowed to present the coronation bou-
quet and the que n haa agreed to ac-
cept It from them, bo they will keep
the rarest and most perfect Windsor
carnations obtainable for the royal
bouquet.

One of her reasons for preferring
the carnation to the sweet pea as the
flower to be used Is that tho weather
will probably be very warm at the
time of the coronation and the sweet
pea fades very easily, while the car-
nation does not droop In the heat

PARADISE FOR THE CURLER
| Scotchmen Flock to Van Cortlandt
Park, New York, Where They
Have Exclusive Clubhouse.
| Scotchmen who still keep alive in
this vicinity the ancient sport of curl-
ing have finally received recognition
from the park officials and have had
a clubhouse built for their exclusive
use at Van Courtlandt Park. Tho
Scots were happy enough when a lake
was made on which they might curl
without the Interference of skaters,
who cut up the Ice so that the
"stanes" would not run true, but now
that they have a little house where
there are lockerB In which to keep
brooms and other appurtenances of
the sport there have been some lively
days.
The curlers come to Van Cortlandt
from all over Greater New York,
Yonkers and several towns In New
Jersey, and rich and poor alike In-
dulge In the Scotch national gams.
Practically every "stane" In use at
Van Cortlandt was quarried at the his-
toric Island of Ailsa Craig In Scotland.
The Scots feel that there are some
canny qualities In this granite that
makes it far superior to anything of
a domestic nature. They weigh from
thirty-eight to forty-two pounds, and
It takes a lot of skill to slide them
properly. New York Herald.
The Editor Will Write It
A short time ago a cranky sort
of an old man came into this office
and stoped his paper because
something in it did not suit hitr.
We've frequently met him on the
street since that time and it is a-
musing to note the look of sur-
prise on the old man's face that
we are still in existence regardless
of the fact he stopped his paper.
Some day, it won't be long either,
that old mau will turu up his toes.
His heart stilled forever. Neigh*
bora and friends will follow his
lifeless clay to the silent city and
lay him to rest among the flowers.
An obituary w ill be published in
theHe columns telling what n kind
father, and good citizen he was,
which the recording Angel will
overlook for charity's sake, mid in
a very short time will be forgot
ten. As he lies out I here in the
cold graveyard wrapped in the
silent slumber of death he will
never know that the last kind
words spoken of him" were by the
editor of that paper which he so
spitefully stopped." Did you ev-
er pause just a moment and think
that your editor, whoever he may
be will write your obituary some
day?—Afton American.
