Broom corn is looking fine.
A good soaking rain Saturday
afternoon will almost insure a good
crop of corn.
E. P. Seevers has his barn al-
most ready for the shingles.
We notice that new buggy mak-
ing regular trips towards Elleudale
and the driver travels rather fast.
Quite a number of Haskew peo- 1
pie were out t. Ft. Supply to spend
the 4th.
Paul Roper started his thresher
the first of the week.
The potato crop will be light in
this section this year, only about
half crop.
Quite a few people were at Has-
kew during the rain and all were
looking more jubilant over the rain
I than a few days previous.
Mr. Babcock gave a dauce the
evening of the 4th and all present
enjoyed themselves as only Haskew
folks can.
Lightning struck the blacksmith
shop during the storm Saturday
but no damage was done except to
tear off a few shingles. Mrs. Bab-
cock living about 30 feet from the
shop recieved a severe shock.

Another interesting showing by
the statistics is that the number of
encumberedj homes i. enlarging
east of the Mississippi river, while
it has been declining in the west
ern portion of the country. In the
past few year building and loan
associations have constructed in
numerable residences for clients
10 be paid on the installment plan.
This tendency has been universal
throughout the country and ac-
counts for a portion of the num
ber of encumbered homes. It is
less prevalent west of the Missis-
sippi river, which, with the pros-
perous times iccident to surplus
crops, whereby mortgages of long
standing have been paid off ac-
count for the decrease in encum-
bered homes in this section.
The enlargment of the general
encumbrance statistics does not
necessarily mean hard times. On
the other hand, in the present case
it is a token of prosperity. When
a wage earner is so thrifty that he
can afford to move out of a rented
house and into his own house,
bought on the installment plan
with mortgage attachment, it is an
omen of well laid foundations in
business and economic matters.
It speaks well, too, for the per-
petuity of the American home and
therefore is a guarauty of the con-
tinuance of the basic principles on
which our government is founded
