Have celebrated the marriage of his fa-
vortte daughter by paneling the
bridal chamber with silver, aud pav-
ing tho road from his home to thai
church with burs of the precious
metal.
The legend concerning the Dona
Maria mine Is that Its owner, the wid-
ow of a Spaniard, De Rodrlques, la-
bored for years saving nuggets of gold,
until silo had a treasury which re-
quired a caravan of 40 mules to convey
the four tons of precious ruotni to Mex-
ico City. It was a long and arduous
Journey, and tho widow was constant-
ly In fear of being robbed. U'heu sha i
Cnnlly reached the capital sho would
not rest content until the fortune lmd
been placed in tho safekeeping of the
Spanish viceroy. A few days later the
widow disappeared, and the vast store
of gold was appropriated by the gov-
ernment treasury und that treasury's
custodian.
j An equally pathetic story Is told of
| the Planchas de Plata (Silver Plates)
j Cilno, which, according to Jesuit uo-
eounts, was discovered by a YaquI In-
diiin during the first half of the eight-
j Couth century. From a deep canyon
the Jesuits are said to have takeu
great globnles of silver ore, weigh-
j Ing from 20 to 50 pounds. One mam-
I Cioth nugget of pure silver, weighing
j fl quarter of a ton, was discovert!, and
; proved tho undoing of both the priest*
I and the Indians. This treasure rocU
was with great <31 111 cult y loaded bo-
j tween two pack mules and taken ta
the capital, where It was seized for
the crown. After years of litigation
the authorities decided that not only
this nugget, but all other ore from the
canyon belonged to the state. Where-
upon Jesuits and Indians conspired
BuccoRsiully to "loso" the mine.
Just 10 miles south of tho Arizona
line and midway between tho border
towns of Nognles and Naco is
Cananea, tho center cf one of the rich-
est copper regions In the world, whilo
to the south la Magdalena station, east
of which Is the Santo Domingo canyon
with its placer gold deposits which
are said to have furnished tho car-
go for many of Spain's treasure gal-
leons.
In addition to copper, gold and sil-
ver, the mines of Sonora produce lead
coal, antimony, mercury, Iron, zinc suit
and tellurium. The graphite deposit* '
Of the state are said to be the finest j
In the world, producing on even bet-
ter grade than the famous mines of SI.

Substitute for Gold.
A substitute for gold Is obtained by
combining 91 parts of copper with tj
parts of antimony ntid adding a little
magnesium carbonate to Increase tlnj
weight. It Is said that this alloy can
be drawn, wrought and soldered very
much like gold, and that It also re-
ceives and retains a golden polish. It
is worth something like 25 ccnts u
pound.
