VALUE OF SEED CORN TESTS
Dy Proper Selection and Testing Crop
Can Be Greatly Increased—Little
Time Required.
(By P. H. ROLFS.)
By proper seed selection and test
lng the corn crop can be greatly In-
creased. Testing the seed requires

It should be examined every day to see

but little time and no expense and It
Is the height of folly for a farmer tc
plant seed and go to all the expense
necessary to accomplish that work
without first knowing what kind ol
seed he is planting.
After the seed corn has been se
lected and has passed all of the In
spections which show that It Is per
feet to the eye, a further inspection If
necessary for germinating quality
This can be done only by using a
seed tester. Such an Implement can
be readily made by anyone on the
farm.
An ordinary cigar box, with two
Inches of sand in It will make an ex
cellent seed tester. When ready fo:
testing, the sand in the box should
be thoroughly wetted, enough water
being used to cover the sand. Hold
It in this position four or five minutes
then wet a muslin cloth and we are
ready to set In place the kernels tc
be tested. After the ears have all
been numbered, we may begin with
ear No. 1, and remove one kernel
about two inches from the tip, and
another kernel about two Inches from
the butt; then by sticking them in
pairs Into the sand, we will have
thia ear ready for testing. Follow
the same method with the second ear,
and ao on, until the kernels from ten
ears are placed In the first row. By
counting down the rows, and noting
the kernels that have failed to ger-
minate, we will have no difficulty In
locating the bad ears.
After the seed tester has received
all of the kernels that can be planted
conveniently, place over the kernels
the wetted muslin rag. This seed

that the sand and *loth are moist. In
the course of a wesk or ten days about

germinated
Another simple method of testing
seed is to take 50 or 100 seeds of
the kind to be tested and place them
between two folds of moistened cot-
ton flannel or blotting paper. Placa
on a plate and cover with another
plate or pane of glass and set in a
warm room. Exarrjne the seeds every
day for six or eight days.
GOOD FERTILIZER FOR CORN
It Gives the Plant Uniform Vigorous
Growth Whloh Continues
Through the Season.
The value of a good corn fertilizer
consists In giving the corn a uniform
vigorous early growth. The stalks are
stout, roots many and spreading,
foliage dark green and healthy. This
strong, vigorous growth continues
throughout the growing period. The
crop matures early, the grain and fod-
der ripening fully 10 to 16 days earlier
than corn planted the same day on
the same quality of land and given
exactly the same careful cultivation.
To obtain a profitable yield select J
sound grain taken from the middle of
the ear; plant when soil Is warm and
mellow. Corn, like wheat and rye.
must have a fertilizer having a full
supply of phosphoric acid. The stalk,
leaves and grain require considerable
potash. For these reasons an animal
bone phosphate containing eight per
cent, of available phosphoric acid, two
per cent, of nitrogen and three per
cent, of actual potash should be
bought. A fertilizer of this quality ap-
plied at the rate of 300 pounds to the
acre in the corn hills, the ground being
rolled sod, will under careful culture
give a profitable yield of grain. On
the oAer hand, when a cheap acid
phosphate Is used the strength of the
fertilizer Is used up In stalk and
leaves, and, unless there Is sufficient
plant food In the sod to make the
grain, the yield of corn Is small. When
raw or long yard manure Is spread
broadcast and plowed under, or a
heavy sod plowed down In the spring.
It Is most profitable to put the corn
In with 2B0 to 300 pounds of some
good standard bone phosphate to the
acre, as the manure and sod will not
be available as plant food until rotted,
which will not be until midsummer,
and not then If the fore part of sum-
mer should be hot and dry
TO PLAY WITH EXPRESSION
Amateur Musicians Should Lock for
the Exceptional Notes and Pas-
sages Requiring Accentuation.
If those amateur musicians who
lament, "Oh, if I could only play
with expression," would only culti-
vate the habit of looking a little
closer for the marks of expression,
their playing would be attended with
better results. Here are just a few
of the points for which a student
should eearch before he has discon-
tinued his investigation of the work.
After reading the piece through/
and before attempting to play it,
we should always look for the ex-
pressive elements in it—that is to
say, the notes which are exceptional
to meter, rhvthm, key or mode; in
other words, for the syncopations,
long and short notes occurring by
exception, repetitions, higher or low-
er auxiliary notes, chromatic notes,
intervals or chords, high notes re-
placing low notes, notes which
change the direction or plan of the
rhythmical design, suspensions oi
appogiaturas, etc. The pupil should
discover the notes and passages re-
quiring accentuation, and should
mark them himself, accents, stops,
f's. sf's, ff's, p's, pp's, etc., and cor-
rect all the faulty expression marks.
In this way the player may come
nearer to the composer's intention
and make his music more interest-
ing to his hearers.—M. M&thia
Lus8y.
