Congressional Situation
Since Oklahoma is entitled to
a number of representatives in
congress, in accord with the in
crease of population as shown by
the recent census, candidates are
already offering themselves, and
soliciting support. It would not
be so bad if Okfuskee county
could furnish the congressman
for this district, whatever terri
tory it may embrace. In accord
with this idea members of both
the old parties are casting about
for a suitable candidate. Among
the democrats the opinion is
general that Judge W. A. Huser
would make a splendid candi-
date. The American would
heartily endorse Mr. Huser, not
only for personal reasons, but
because he certainly possesses
every quality essential to the
makeup of a congressman who
could and would serve the peo
pie's interests. In fact the
American has attempted to pur-
suade Mr. Huser to enter the
race, but so far he has shied off
and declined to commit himself.
It possible however, that he
needs coaxing, and may have the
idea that the office still seeks the
man. However, we have ob-
served that most people are
willing to meet an office half
way and if the opportunity offers
to overtake it from the rear.
But Judge Huser is not likely to
try to work the old gag about
being pushed into the race by
his friends, and if he decides in
due season to become a candi-
date, he will doubtless blushing
ly admit "Barkus is willing."
journalism. It has been said
said that when a man is too lazy
to work he gets a job of teach
ing school. If he fails at this
he goes to preaching. Another
failure and we find him editing
a newspaper. What happens to
him after that deponent sayeth
not. These few remarks are not
intended as a reflection either on
the above mentioned paeacher
on his publication, but are mere-
ly passing comments on an ever
recurrent situation. 'Tis a pity
that the unmarked and forgotten
mounds in the potters field of
the newspaper graveyard, do
not serve as a warning to those
who imagine that nothing is re-
quired to run.a paper, save gall,
and of course that's all.
For the Jingle Writers
The American has been relia-
ble informed that there are a
numberof high-class jingle art-
ists in Weleetka who can write
poetry whenever they want to.
Now the American wants to be
a patron saint to these embryo
Scotts' and Longfellow's, and as
an incentive to the production of
immortal verse we are going to
offer a prize of a million dollars
for the best production subject
tee following conditions.
Only the real, live, soul inspir-
ing "limerick" will be allowed
in the contest, and the word
Weleetka must be used in the
verse
Below we give a specimen to
illustrate our meaning:
"There was a young girl in We-
leetka,
Who moved in the circles eliteka;
But when she was wed,
She found, so 'lis said,
Her man worked for Walker &
Streetka."
Remember that the best lim-
erick entitles you to a million dol-
lars, the second a trip to Europe,
if anyone writes any which is
worse than the one above, he
will be given a trip to the peni-
tentiary.
When the youth of our coun-
try reaches the period where
they are ashamed of the eood
old parents who gave them being
and reared them to advantages
gained by their sacrifices, it is
time to take a good clapboard
and apply it to their posterior
anatomy. Occasionally you will
find some razzle-brained youth
who, because his father says
'Pass them prunes," and eats
with his knife and drinks his
coffee by the suction process, is
rather inclined to disclaim re-
'ationship. Presidential timber
is never obtained among such
vouths, unless the application of
a strap changes the condition of
his mind and leads him to recog-
nize the fact that if he is better
educated and better qualified for
the duties of life, it is only what
would naturally b e expected,
and that what he is he owes to
those same parents who have
lived a life of denial and sacri-
fice that opportunities might
come to the child.
