WILL ARDMORE DO IT?
With one itroke of the hammer
the Ardmore Chamber of Commerce
can make a deal that will bring a half
dozen bio oil well supply companies to
thii city. With the Sf..ne stroke Ard
more can be given connection with the
wonderful asphalt deposits at Wood-
ford which will result in building as-
phalt refineries paint and varnish
factories in this city.
With the same stroke it can add
easily several millions of wealth to
Carter county by making practical the
development of the woncerful cement
resources of the county.
This Is not a dream. It is a solid
fact. This Is not a mere wish. It can
be made a reality by proper efforts j
being made now.
The oil area of Carter county is
going to be touched by a line of rail-
way. If that line Is built exclusively from
some other point Ardmore will suffer
as a consequence.
If Ardmore builds a line it will get
the patronage although a line may
also be built from sonic other point.
There Is no need of any hysterical
fears. Ardmore occupies a position
that makes it supremery fitted to serve
the field and to capture the tonnage
and passenger traffic.
By uniting the different forces of
the city into one harmonious group
by eliminating self aggrandizement
and selfish interests the city has the
ingenuity and the wealth to build the
line.
There is not a moment to lose. The
Chamber of Commerce should get its
be6t brains together and figure out
a proposition which it can meet and
then place that proposition before the
prospective railway builders including j
the Santa Fe which is now surveying
one ut whom i:i named by til": hlatc
chairman of ;i ll nf the three political
parties casting the grmtest number
of voles fur governor ut the last pre-
ceding i In tion. It ereales a county
election hoard consisting of three inem-
licrs one ol whom is naned by tile
county chairman ol each of such three
political parlies. It creates a precinct
ibitlnii l.eniii in each election pre-
lim! In the state computed of three
members line Of whlllll is designated
by tlie county chairman of each of
sue h political parties.
"Tin members thus appointed are
subject tn removal at any time with-'
mil cause by the chairman who up-
points tin in. They may lie removed !
lor misconduct by the courts. Tblsj
prnpiKi d law Is subject to criticism In I
the lolloping particulars: ;
"It Is a Cimilaineiital principle of'
our republic that the majority lias the
right to rule. All of our crnit Issues
are settled by the majority. When a
majority of the people have i-piikcn
and hae selected oflicers lor the I'nlt-
ed States or for the states these of-
licers have a right to exercise the
liimiions of government and tin y are
responsible to the w hole people under
the law ami under their oaths of of-
lice. This lo-calbil lair election law
lakes away from Hie majority of the
people the control of their elections
and puis this control into the hands
of the two minority parties. It makes
no difference how small a vote is cast
by the minority partu s. 1 hey may 1111

lion bnanl the county election boards
are without exception appointed by
men who do not hold a public office
and who are mil responsible to the
people of the htale. The state chair-
man of I he socialist party does not
hold a state oflice. The same is true
of tlie respective chairmen of the re-
publican and democratic parties. They
hold partisan jMisitiinis. Tin y are not
lespoiislilo to the people fur their po-
sition but to tlie political nrgnuizii-
liou vihich they represent. They do
not I' present the people hut merely
a political section of the people. They
exercise no public liiiictiuu 110 public

ganization lor political purposes. They

"This amendment not only gives
these partisan chairmen tlie power to
name Heir election officers in the
state but it gives tin 111 the power of
removal at any time and without

St. Louis .Mo. Oct. 11.- The opeu-
inn sermon of the 44. h triennial con
vention of the Protestant Kplscopal
church was delivered at the Moolah
temple today by bishop Daniel S.
Tuttle senior bishop. Taking as his
text. Acts 27 :1 "Paul said lo the
1 Centurion and to the soldiers Kxccpt
these abide In the sMp ye cannot be
I saved" the bishop discussed the con
tribution the Kplscoual church could
make to unity and tnutneiuted Ilev

"I do not want to piesume. Cana-
dian brethren are here and they are
Americans ad well as we. Represent-
atives of tlie mother church of KnR-
laud are here. We revere her ami
we love tlietn. She fostered our youth
In a 'lout! continuance or nursing care
and protection.' There Is nothing but
a heaped up fulness of gratitude in
uiir hearts and we are humbly proud
of our kinship with tlie Church of
Kngland and the Church in Canada.
Hut under !od's providence adoles-
cent years have sent us out from un-
der our mother's nof. We are house-
keeping now in a home of one. Ask-
ing permission to use the word 'Amer-
ican' for short 'we want to have tin
American flavor ill out- efiurch. Amer-
ican precedents will leave them alone
un practiced if American spirit and
American taste and American habit do
not take to them.
'Then in that good time when an
approaching unity seems somewhat
to materialize we want to offer our
fellow Christians of other names
round about us an American religion
with an American flavor as our con-
trihtit ion.
"Are we presuming too much? We
grant to the layman with freedom of
only tying him
faith in the
simple verities of the apostles' creed.
"Is that not American?
"We r've to the layman full par-
ticipation in the deliberations of the
church and ! voice and a vote in de-
termining the results of such deliber-
ations. "Is that not -American?
"We have dioceses corresponding to
the states with their state sovereign
ties and tiu general convention cor-
responding to I he federal government.
"Is that not American?
' We have a church penetrating into
all pans of the I'tiifed States and its
possessions. There Is not a road of
ground over which tlie Stars and
the ship and help to save others in-
stead of rowing awry in the lifeboat
to save ourselves. If we stay some
will be saved. If wr run away some
will not be saved.
Drother churchmen let us play the
fame fairly. Uive aim take with good
wiil and love. Hold the trusts com-
mined to us firmly ntt patiently and
be ready to turn over by and by to
brethren who may be willing to re-
ceive them helps of reverence and
roundness and historic i-achorage and
American flavor.
"Krother Americans the dreadful
war is blotting out or maiming or
blinding almost all the young maji
hood of Kurope. How gloriously those
young men gathered to the colors and
how bravely they have fought and
died! Hut the exhaustion of men and
money there will put added respon-
sibility 011 us litre to stand by the
missions. In awakening China. In
enterprising Japan. In outcrying Af-
rica. In devastated Armenia. God
help us in our strength which lie
gives us to stand by for help when
our brethren of Kurope exhausted
distracted almost destroyed cannot
well continue at least Tor a time to
do so!
"brethren all I do not want to mar
this sermon by personal patchings.
Hut it is not personal is it it is
lifted out of the personal isn't it for
me to say to you my thanks and to
give you my love and to ask you to
take my blessing?"

Darkie Going North.
Washington Oct. 11. Unprecedent
ed migration of negro laborers from
the south toward the north where the
war has resulted in scarcity of Euro
pean' Immigrant laborers has attract
ed the attention of the department of
labor.
Reports are being received from
northern labor organization who view
the movement with disfavor and from
employers In the south who regard
It with some apprehension.
Material Is being preserved which
may be used later should the move-
ment call for investigation.
That Ardmore is making rapid
tildes towards the consummation
of the merchants expectations and be-
coming a great retail center Is mani-
fest bv the report being prepared for
the business Mens Association cover
inir the trade extension bureau worK
which was Inaugurate and carried
during the summer months.
One of the local banks handles all
of the rebates and acts as the clear-
ing house and passes the vouchers
on tlie the secretary of the associa
tion who keeps tlie rerords.
It Is from this record that an ab-
solute accurate report can he made
and It shows a tremendous Increase
coveting the past three months.
The most gratifying part of the re-
port being made out is that the trade
territory Hias been widely extended
and that shoppers as far north as
fifty two miles have been altracked
to Ardmore. Trade that has hitherto
been conceded to Texas centers Is
also coming here. Mr. Gilbert who Is
conducting the advertising campaign
takes the position that there Is a cer-
tain percentage of business which
leaves all towns and goes to larger
centers and without prejudice to those
towns the efforts being made to pre-
sent Ardmore's claims. "If you cannot
get It at your home town and must
go away for It ypu can get It in
Ardmore" fs the slogan.
